Sanders: Your report in the above case was very concise and satisfactory, in your letter, you request the names of the Mayo doctors who reported that lead poisoning of the claimant might have been caused by absorption from gasoline.

He does know, however, that his patient is sick and in many Instances, though not always, he is right in believing that he has lead poisoning* He is, therefore, very loathe to accept any situation which he believes has a certain element of risk attached to It, and no amount of criticism will change his attitude.

It is our thought to answer this letter somewhat as follows: "Replying to your letter of May 16th, we are pleased to advise there has not been a single ca.se of lead poisoning occur in the distribution of Ethyl Gasoline or lead treated gasoline.

It would appear to me in handling lead arsenate, arsenical poisoning would develop more rapidly than lead poisoning.

I am very much interested in this matter for the follow ing reasons* Pirst of all I and my associates have been investigating the public health aspects of Ethyl Gasoline distribution over a period of a number of years in an attempt to determine whether or not there is any possibility of danger to workers or public through the use of this gasoline* In co-operation with the United States Public Health Service we have examined from time to time large numbers of filling station handlers, garage,workers, etc* Up to the present over a period of now six years, we have been unable to find a single instance of poisoning trace able to the handling of Ethyl Gasoline* It is there fore a matter of considerable interest to know whether the case affeeting you is a bonafide injury or whether there has been some injury of another type which has been-confused with lead poisoning* I would be very glad if you would write to me giving me such informa tion as there is available as to the claims of the man and as to what you may know about: his actual illness, when it occurred, and what possible exposure he may have had* I would like also to know whether he has hadhmedical attendant^,'and where, in order that I may get in touch with his physicians if possible and determine what has been done* Our previous experi ence with matters of this kind leads hs to doubt the existence of lead poisoningj however, I should like to be in position to consider the whole case on its merits and if at all possible to make an examination of the claimant.

He is now president of the association of *; I white lead manufacturers of the country and he came to see me the other evening about a scheme he is much interested in, some research work in lead poisoning which he says the association is willing to finance very liberally.

Our preliminary thinking is that lead and mercury poisoning would be good subjects for this presenta tion, For this purpose we thought that illustrations by photographs of lead encephalitis or paralysis nay make good subjects for such a portrayal.
