MANUAL HANDLING AND STORAGE OF MATERIALS Machines and other heavy objects Manual handling of heavy machinery and like objects requires special skill and knowl edge Sometimes machines or castings weighing 100 tons or more must be moved from freight cars to the ground level and into permanent position without use of heavy duty cranes or similar equipment Only general principles of safety for such jobs can be suggested Each one presents its own problems and requires careful study and thorough planning Some companies build scale models of the machines and the blocking, jacks, rollers, and other equip ment to be used and then work out the procedure in miniature.

MANUAL HANDLING AND STORAGE OF MATERIALS 2 Cleats on the blocking to prevent shift ing of the jack base 3 A meebng surface at right angles to the direction of the lift for the jack head with its shun to bear against 4 Props or guys to the load to prevent its swinging sidewise when lifting begins When a jack handle is placed in the socket, the workman should make sure that the area is clear and that there is ample room for an unobstructed swing of the han dle before he applies pressure A faulty movement in the load may cause the handle to pop up and strike another worker The man operating the handle should stand to one side so that if the handle kicks, it will not catch him in the body or face After the load is raised, metal horses or substantial horses or blocking of heavy wood should be placed under it for support m case the jack should let go A raised load should never be allowed to remain supported only by jacks The handles of the jacks should be removed and placed out of the way to prevent workers from walk ing into them When a jack is released, the worker should keep all parts of his body clear of the movement of the handle.

MACHINE TOOLS the functions of two or more basic groups There are insufficient statistical data to make a conclusive evaluation of the hazards of machine tools Injuries resulting from machine tool operations are reported less frequently than injuries from power presses or metal shears, but still present some of the more senous problems in the metal products industries General Safety Rules The greatest emphasis and dependence, nevertheless, must be placed upon safe op eration A policy to eliminate unsafe prac tices which result m operator injury should be established and should include these pro visions' 1 Operation, adjustment, and repair of any machine tool must be restricted to experi enced and trained personnel or appren tices under close supervision 2 Safe work procedures must be estab lished, and short cuts and chance-taking prohibited. 3 Supervisors must be responsible for the enforcement of this policy and for mak ing certain that no deviation from points 1 and 2 is permitted Maintenance personnel and repairmen should comply with this three-point policy.
