The main cause for failure of the hydrolysis has been shown to be the presence of lead in the hydrolysis autoclave; (the Dye Works autoclave used for this hydrolysis has a poured lead gasket which must be replaced frequently on account of failure) large amounts of lead reduce the dye stoichiometrically, small amounts appear to hinder the hydrolysis all out of proportion to the amount of lead present.
