During this period, extensive studies have been carried on in the laboratories of Orchem and of the Pigments Department and numerous reports are to be found in the files of each laboratory* These reports include a thorough review of the historical aspects of the develepmant and this will not be repeated herein* For a brief review thereof, reference is made to Newark report 0-46-7* Recently, a decision has been rendered to carry on research leading up to the full scale manufacture of phthalocyanlna pigments within the Pigments Department* This research has now progressed sub stantially to the point of pilot plant operation, and, although numerous patent surveys have been made by the Jackson Laboratory of Orchem and the patent situation is fairly well understood by those interested in it, no such survey of the art has heretofore been made at Newark and it seems highly desirable to make such a complete survey from our own point of view* With these facts in mind, the patent art has been thoroughly reviewed with particular reference to the preferred process at Newark, but a brief summary has also been included of the whole phthalocyanlne art,in anticipation of a need for broadening this survey at some future date* SCOPE OF THE REVIEW AND SOURCES: As pointed out above, this review has been directed particularly towards one process now contemplated for use at Newark but has also includedarather careful search of the art on the synthesis and finishing of copper phthalocyanlne and its chlorinated derivatives.
