The symptoms which you describe are in no way characteristic of tetraethyl lead poisoning.

April 25, 1935 Mr* Georges Thenault Boon 5^7 25 Avenue VIctor-Emmanuel III Paris Prance , Dear Mr* Thenault: I have not heard from you for eorae time and I toko it that no news from you is probably good news in that it indicates that you are not having any very serious difficulties which concern me* The chief purpose of this letter is to call your attention to an ' article which was recently published "On Intoxication by Tetraethyl Lead" by M* Duvolr and F* Cost, the latter as you probably know being our associate and colleague.

Furthermore tetraethyl lead does not volatilize out of gasoline in any measurable quantity, therefore it would have been impossible under the conditions for this Individual to have been exposed to the fumes of tetraethyl lead.

I would appreciate any information you might give me regarding your experience with industrial hazards, or tetraethyl Ethyl lead, or refer mo to the proper references.

The facts are these* (1) The study of the distribution of lead in exper imental animals after the absorption of tetraethyl lead (refer to able 7 In article The Behavior of Lead in the Animal Organism XI Tetraethyl Lead) show that aside from the lead absorbed into the skin at the site of application comparatively insignificant amounts of lead occur in the skin and hair. (2) rQje distribution of lead in animals after the absorption of inorganic lead compounds does not favor the skin to any appreciable extent.

Here a sufficient concentration of lead in the brain, in association with a history of exposure to tetraethyl lead, comes very near indeed to proof of fatal tetraethyl lead poisoning, in the hands of a well informed person.

It is true that all containers used for the Carriage of leaded gasoline are marked to indicate that tetraethyl lead has been added to the gasoline.

I must say* however, that I feel1the importance of getting this information into scientific literature* It is of the utmost consequence that real data he available for scientific men as to the extent of absorption of tetra ethyl lead and as to the extent, In consequence, of the hazard arising from the handling of compounds containing tetraethyl lead.

For this reason, I believe that such people as the Vacuum Oil Company would remonstrate against the inability to use any tetraethyl lead although we will be glad to issue regulations to the effect that no lead shall be so used if you feel that it is necessary.

They do not particularly wish to work against each other by attempting to demonstrate that their gasoline is better than competitive leaded gasoline and, therefore, about all that is left for them to demonstrate is the effective ness of tetraethyl lead as an anti-knock thus working for all customers against the Shell who are opposing the use of lead in any form# For this reason, I believe that such people as the Vacuum Oil Company would remonstrate against the inability to use any tetraethyl lead although we will be glad to issue regulations to the effect that no lead shall be so used if you feel that it is necessary* The Vacuum Oil Company has bought two demonstrating engines (l-Australiaj lNew Zealand) whioh may give some idea of the amount of this sort of work that goes on.
