Hitchens Purpose of this call was to discuss early results of Chestnut Run work on Q/S W.R. CH-034-83, involving severe strength deter ioration of customer's universal colorant ("Kromotint" Yellow) made with DALAMAR Yellow YW-958-P. Customer reports that YW-958-P, Lot 2 made colorant which lost 50% of its strength on standing one month at room temperature, another 20% after three weeks in an oven test at 125F. Previous laboratory evaluation of YW-958-P product standard SL-81958 in this same colorant produced entirely satisfactory results. A production batch of some 190 quarts of unusable colorant made with Lot 2 is being held. Preliminary Chestnut Run data indicate that recrystallization induced by ethylene glycol may not be a major contributing factor to. the strength loss, Don Cook agreed to repeat a laboratory evaluation of SL-81958 and Lot 2 simultaneously under identical conditions. He will also include YW-911-P in this test, not because this grade might be used; but to find out if YW-958-P and YW-911-P behave differently because of different surfactant composition. If Lot 2 and SL-81958 perform the same in.this test, it will be an indication that something in the colorant vehicle has changed since the first evaluation.
