1 Q What did you do at the National Institute? 2 A I was the head of the lung pathology 3 laboratory. 4 Q And on a daily basis during that 15 years 5 can you just describe the type of things that you did 6 and your progression through that? 7 A Like all of the National Institutes of 8 Health, the Institute of Environmental Health Science 9 is involved in understanding how environmental agents 10 cause human disease, and we are trying to understand, 11 again, the basic mechanisms of that process. 12 That means that biochemistry, the molecular 13 biology involved in understanding the disease so they 14 can be cured, somehow treated. 15 I was involved in, at that time, and still 16 am, in the understanding of how asbestos fibers, 17 inhaled asbestos fibers cause disease as well as other 18 environmental agents. 19 Q Now, prior to your joining the National 20 Institute of Health, could you briefly describe for 21 the ladies and gentlemen of the jury a little bit
