Dear Dr. TerHaar:
I have t he f e e l in g t h a t I have not d e a lt w it h you, d i r e c t l y , t o such an ex t en t o r in such a manner as t o enable e it h e r o f us t o a r r iv e a t any p o in t o f acquaint ance o r under st anding which i s s a t i s f a c t o r y t o e i t h e r o f us. For my p a r t I r eg r et t h is ver y much indeed, f o r I have been ab le p r e v io u sly t o deal e f f e c t i v e l y , I b e lie v e , w it h any o f t he t e ch n ica l o r a d m in ist r a t iv e personnel o f Et hy l Cor p or at ion . Perhaps I m ight t ake r efuge in my past (and present ) d i s a b i l i t i e s as t he b asis f o r our s i t u a t io n , but I cann ot , sin ce I am s t i l l a conscious i f not alt o g et h er whole person. I would Tik e t h e r e f o r e t o st a t e t he case o f our p r esen t n ecessit y o f r e t r ie v in g as much as p o ssib le from t he ex per im ent al work on lead w it h which both o f us ar e now in v olv ed .
As you may know from Bernard So b el, St an ley Gross has f i n a l l y made a r ep or t on h is work in at t em pt in g t o gat her t og et h er t he dat a o f our work ex p er im en t ally on lead , as r epr esen t ed by t he u t i l i z a t i o n o f a se r ie s o f human Su b j ect s. What you may t h in k o f h is r e p o r t i s not my concern, a t p r esen t , but what op in io n you have o f t he e x p e r i mental program i t s e l f i s e n t i r e l y a d i f f e r e n t m at t er , in which I am deeply in v olv ed .
Let me say a t t he s t a r t o f my comments t h at I have never con su lt ed f u l l y w it h Dr. Gross. I was ov er t ak en by r et ir em en t a t a t im e when I was t oo busy t o prepare a pr oper p r esen t at io n o f t he work, and a f t e r t h a t when I was st r ick e n w h olly unex pect edly by a cer eb r al hemorrhage I was rendered com plet ely h elp less f o r a co n sid er ab le p er iod o f t im e ( y ear s) . S u r p r is in g ly , however, I recov er ed l a t e r t o such an ex t en t as t o be able t o ap p r eciat e and t o a co n sid er ab le ex t en t , t o be ab le t o get back t o work on t h is s p e c i f i c t ask in which I was so deeply immersed f o r so long a tim e ( n ear ly 35 y ear s) .
On so r eco v er in g , I found t o my in t en se r e g r e t , t h at t he e f f o r t s o f St an ley Gross t o underst and what I was at t em pt ing t o do were a b so lu t ely in v ain . To make a long and confused st o r y b r i e f and c le a r ( w it h ou t going in t o t he gruesome d e t a il s ) I had t o get

him ou t o f my l i f e , and in or der t o be honest w it h him, I had t o t e l l him j u s t t h a t . Acco r d in g ly I t o l d Mr. Sobel t he t r u t h as g en t ly as p o ssib le , and t hen sa id t h a t i f he and you b eliev ed you should go ahead and have h is r e p o r t p u b lish ed (on t he t heor y t h a t he would make a v a ila b le t o you two and ot h er s t he dat a in such form as t o make them a v a ila b le ) I would not o b j e ct , o r t ake any a ct io n t o t he co n t r ar y . Th is, I r e a li z e is a c t u a l l y u n sa t isf a ct o r y , bu t I do n ot know what e lse I can do.
Meanwhile, I am p u t t in g t he e n t ir e t h in g t og et h er , as I b e lie v e i t t o be n ecessar y , and in due course t h is w i l l be p u b lish ed as t he work o f t he Ket t er in g Lab or at or y , now t he Department o f Environm ent al Healt h ( in clu d in g i n d u s t r i a l h ealt h ) ( as in f a c t , i t has always been) , o f t he Colleg e o f Med icin e o f t he U n iv e r sit y o f Cin cin n a t i' . I am slow but I ex pect t o com plet e t he t ask w it h in 1979, and I b e lie v e I can do i t , i f I t ak e my t im e, as w ell as I ev er cou ld have done i t .
I 'm d e v a st a t in ly sor r y t o have t o say t h i s , f o r when I was so h e lp le ss, I cou ld see no ot h er way o f g et t in g t h is j ob done, and I am deeply g r a t e f u l t o him, you and Sobel f o r undert ak ing t h is t ask when i t seemed ce r t a in t h a t I would never be ab le t o do i t . I sh a ll have t o prove t h at I can, but I sh a ll con t in u e in con fid en ce t h a t I can, e sp e cia l! i f in so doing I am not being a r t f it r a r y and r u t h le ss.
Wit h regards and t he b est o f Christ m as g r e e t in g s.
