DESCRIPTION OP THE COMPANY The International Smelting and Refining Caapeny ia a corporation incorporated under the lawa of the State of Uontana. The Company is engaged in the mining, concentration, smelting and refining of non-ferrous metals, principally copper, lead, zinc, silver, gold, biaauth and other metals re covered by treatment of the ores mined for their own account or treated on a custom smelting basis. The East Chicago plant consists of several distinct and separate plants. While these plants are all operated by the asms management and technical staff, and within the same fenced area, they are, as a matter of fact, three distinct businesses, the Lead Refining Department refines lead bullion received fran the Tooele, Utah plant of the International Ssmlting and Refining Company, and also lead bullion from the East Hslena plant of the American Ssmlting and Refining Company. The products produced from lead bullion are refined pig leed, antlmonial lead and an alloy of silver and gold. In a separate portion of the fenced area of the plant ia locatsd the White Lead Department. This consists of a complete eleotrolytlc white lead plant which uses a portion of ths lead refined at the Lead Rs finery as a raw material far the electrolytic corrosion of lead to produoa whits lead. This plant m ths first of Its kind built In the world. After corrosion, tha white lead is settled, filtered, washed, dried and barrelled. A portion of the dry white lead is transferred to tha Lead-in-Oil Department, where It is Incorporated with linseed oil to make a marketable lead-in-oil product used by painters to make all forma of paint. As a by-product of the electrolytic white lead plant operations, an anode allme is produced which ia transferred to tha BiaauthRaf ining Department, bare bismith is recovered fraa the sliwe end separated from msall aaounta of other mtala associated with it. Tha Zinc Oxide Department obtains electrolytic nine frem tha western statas and converts it into high grade Trench Process nine oxides which era used in tha pharmaceutical, paint, rubber and ceramic Industries. 595 1 1 o o o o LJ z a. In addition, special furaaoes are provided for the refining of acrap zinc anddie cast scrap to produce superior forms of marketable zinc azide. Zinc by products are purchased for the production of Jtaariean Process lino azide required for special paint purposes, Hieee operations comprise the use of distinctly different processes. The lead Roflnory is known in the trade as a Parkas Procoss plant. The process requires kettles, furnaces and equipment of a particularly rugged type adaptod to the heavy metals and process requirements. The labor used must be capable of withstanding heat and performing heavy manual labor. In many cases skill is secondary to physical ability. The Whits Lead Plafit is a highly technical operation that requires employees with a higher level of intelligence and mental alertness as nsll as the ability to think and set quickly. The type of individual required ia fundamentally different from that required for the Lead Refinery. The operation of the Zinc Oxide plant is principally furnace work of a type where alertness, knowledge, skill end occasional hot, heavy manual labor is required. ofJSHnl<2ee January 1st 1944 Total number of employees 401 Employee* within, the bargaining umlt 291 Way 1st 1944 3TO 260 PNYC00001596 2
