My dear Prof. Winslow: With reference to your letter of 2-9-33 with enclosure, several of us have gone over same and find it covers the essential parts as well as could be done in a short general article. Regarding the use of an outer housing in connection with Sand Blast Barrels (par. 2), this is undoubtedly an extra precaution but does not necessarily give additional protection if the barrel suction is functioning properly. Operators in fact are rather reluctant to make use of such an housing. Skips are more of a labor saving device than a device to reduce dust. In par. 4 mention is made of 1300 linear feet as the flow of air necessary to maintain satisfactory conditions. We are not in a position to comment on this. If we have ary suggestions to make, it is that emphasis be placed on the maintenance of all such apparatus in good condition, as you have pointed out in par. 7, including particularly a thorougn cleaning of the dust collecting screens. We also feel some simple ways should be described so that foundrymen and others can determine if they have the proper flow of air (1300 ft.
