To find out if any further work had been done on Montars. i SUMMARY Aroclor 1234 Is still being used in polysulphide sealants but Pope explained to me that they are in the process of developing a new range of polysulphide sealants and it is more than likely that Santicizer 160 will be used as the plasticizer rather than Aroclor 1254. Problems have been experienced making a polysulphide curing paste. Montars are still being investigated as tar substitutes. j' ACTION REQUIRED VJH - Please comment regarding problem of curing 8>l (M) 4-4/6D-ZOO Bloc IDO-1 DSW 588482 STLCOPCB4093818 i SCSlC'CrCtC - 2~ DETAILS AROCLOR 1254 Aroclor 1254 continues to be used for polysulphide sealants. Production of these sealants is going very well and they are virtually at full capacity. SANTICIZER loO . ; Pope explained that Sealocrete are in the process of developing a new range of polysulphide sealants and he feels that it is more than likely that Santicizer 160 will be used rather than Aroclor 1254 for this new range of sealants. Pope appreciates that Santicizer 160 is more volatile than Aroclor 1254 but'according to tests to date they can make a sealant within the British Standard Specification. By using Santicizer 160 they get certain advantages over Aroclor 12p4 particularly as far as flow characteristics are conoemed. POLYSULPHIDE CURING PASTE ' Sealocrete manufacture a curing paste containing Aroclor 1254 a metallic peroxide (lead or zinc) and Santocure MOR*' They have already made up about a dozen batches of this curing paste but on two occasions the mix has exploded. According to Pope the following p: ' ' ' Part of the kroclot' is hea- _ __ melting- point of Santocure MOR.r The Santocure MOR is melted in the heated Aroclor, cooled and the balance of the Aroclor is added and the mix is left to stand. The lead or zinc peroxide which is a mixture with 50# oxide is then added by means of a high speed mixer. On one occasion the mix was left to stand overnight and when they arrived in the morning they found Aroclor dripping from the ceiling. The second time they managed to get the mix out In the yard. Pope was obviously very worried about this and asked for our comments. He felt himself that perhaps there was a certain amount of heat build-up during the high speed mixing which caused these explosions. Obviously Pope would appreciate any coirments from Monsanto regarding this phenomena. For the time being however he will use a slow mixing technique. ' ; MONTARS Montars are still being investigated as tar substitutes and Pope hopes to have some information for me when I next call. V/.W. MORRIS DSW 588483 STLCOPCB4093819
