Specific instructions were given to you on the jjnmediate action you were to take to curb sales distribution and segregate stocks of Uiese products in our units and our dealers. Mr. Kinsell's letter was primarily directed to regions in which those states and cities have existing strict lead laws prohibiting the sale and/or use of more than l'jk lead in interior paints. Current investigations and forthcoming laws are not restricted to specific areas or cities but will ppply across the entire country. Therefore, we are directing your attention to the following required action: The products listed below contain more than 1$ of lead and are to be disposed of immediately. This means drnping all plant, unit and dealer stocks: Y-5694 and Y-579k Tiber Green Y-5695 and Y-5795 Scarlet Red Y-5696 and Y-5796 Sun Yellow Y-5697 and Y-5797 Citrus Orange Regional Directors are to coordinate and supervise the disposition of these materials in such a .ui..u.or that does not further promulgate their use by anyone# anywhere. Reports are to be submitted to this office when this action has been completed. The balance of the deep colors in the 5600 and 5700 lines are not to be offered as consumer products through dealers or our own retail outlets. They are to be removed from shelves and kept in the stock rooms or warehouses. The product lines listed on Page 3 contain ready mixed colors having in excess of Vf) lead. These items are to be removed from the shelves of our units and our dealers and are to be kept in stock rooms or warehouses as well. Our dealers and contractors are to be alerted to the use of lead products in homes, public buildings, apartments, schools and similar structures accommodating CLD01Z604 -2- , v. < the general public. These products are for industrial use only and vill be labeled as such. Under no circumstances are they to be sold to consumers. The last area of concern lies with old inventories of Glidden products dating back prior to reformulation to eliminate or minimize lead content. We may have dealers - or former dealers - who are still carrying old stocks of discontinued colors containing lead in excess of 1$. All unit managers are to canvas dealers and former known dealers and advise them to remove these items from their shelves and keep them in stock rooms or off the retail floor, Hiey must not be sold to consumers. A list of these products is attached. Many of our units have already complied with Mr. Kinsell's directive in recalling these materials as detailed in his letter of September 2k, 1971* ********* The program detailed above is to be considered inclusive for all units.
