Doty conveyed Jessie Butler's thanks and appreciation to the members for the help and cooperation he received as chairman of the HSC. G. T. Ryan spoke to the group about the new plant breathing air system that was recently approved. The new system will be one of the best in industry and should be in service by November, 1981. Old Business Manlift Safety A report on the progress being made by the Committee working on this problem was postponed until the next meeting due to M. Riddle being absent. Reported Hazard of Electric Plugs This discussion was postponed due to the absence of M. Riddle. New Business Mosquitos This was reported as a problem in the plant. The Truck Department now has a sprayer mounted on a plant truck and will spray a unit on a request from supervision. Emergency Calls to the Guards It was reported that errors are sometimes made in dispatching emergency aid--excitement causes incorrect or incomplete information to be given. S&LP believes that the present phone procedure is the best method of getting the necessary information to the guard. They emphasized that the caller must carefully tell the guard what the problem is and where aid is needed co insure a prompt; and accurate response. SC 13009 LAM014226 W. E. Bean, et al -2- June 3, 1981 Asbestos Pickup It was reported that plastic bags containing asbestos do not appear to be picked up on a very frequent schedule. e The procedure now used by the Truck Department for asbestos pickup is: The insulators are to call the Truck Department when they have asbestos to be picked up. The amount and location will be logged by the Truck Department. If the amount is large, the pickup will be made that day. If it is small it will be picked up on a once-per-week basis. The Truck Department reports that occasionally they find bags of asbestos that have not been called in. They also stated that if anyone sees bags of asbestos that have been left in an area for over a week, they should call the Truck Department. The Hourly Safety Committee discussed the safety problem caused by pedestrian traffic around the trucks that are in line for the plant scales. The suggestions made : 1. Direct pedestrian traffic away from the trucks. 2. Reroute the trucks such that they line up on the east side of the scales. 3. Increase the staffing of the scales to move the trucks through faster.
