OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS
SUBJECT: "p o n s o l " s p r a y DRYER #2
OPERATION:
Chambers Works Bldg. 743 IX-1
Loading Instructions "Sevron" Colors
1. Be certain T-13, the chute, P-l6, all piping and CY-2 are clean.
2. Add water to the top of the lower agitator blade, then turn on the agitator. Load the "Sevron" crude presscake to T-13 using the box dumper, CY-2.
3. See section in this manual entitled "Box Dumper" for proper operation of CY-2.
3. Agitate and circulate the charge to obtain a smooth slurry. While agitating, adjust pH to 5.5-6.5 using 3-4 lb. shots of either HC1 or caustic solution.
Use HC1 if pH is above 6.5 or caustic solution of below 5.5. Add carefully and DO NOT EXCEED pH of 6.5 as a higher pH will cause the product to decompose.
HC1 and caustic solution are highly corrosive and can cause serious burns to the skin. Wear acid suit, face shield and rubber gloves when handling. See "Ponsol" area Special Instruction #31 for further Instructions for handling caustic solution.
4. After the pH has been adjusted, add boric acid and sugar as called for on the line up card.
These ingredients can be added by
(a) using the box dumper CY-2. It may be necessary to hose down the boric acid to prevent excessive dusting as the box is inverted by CY-2.
(b) pump the charge to feed tank T-12 and add through the dispersant loader, CY-1,
5. If the charge appears thick or viscous, add water as necessary to thin down the charge.
Use your own Judgement as to how much water to add. Dp not add any more water than necessary.

6. DO NOT USE HOT WATER.
7. KEEP CHARGE AGITATING TO PREVENT SETTLING.
Special Instructions for "Sevron" Red GL
1. After all ingredients have been added, sample 1 pint of the slurry to GAL as a "Rush Control Sample" for "Spectro AI on a Dry Basis". The results should be expressed as a Strength Ratio (S/R) and must be 73/100 or higher (S/L of 73/100 = AI of 50.4Z). If S/R below 73/100, add another 500 lbs. of boric acid and resample of time allows. If S/R is above 95/100, contact supervision (S/R of 95/100 = AI of 38.750 .
2. Start dryer at 36 pm and sample 1st barrel to GAL for spectro AI. If above 73/100, increase rate to 5 gpm and dry charge. If below 73/100, shut down dryer, add another 500 lbs. of boric acid, stir in well and repeat start up as above.
