During the test the number of cags Ind in cach pen was recorded to evaluate egg production. Al eggs collected for sampling or incubation were marked with the pen number using a permanent ink marking pen for identification. Hatchlings were identified by leg bands so that they could be traced totheir parental penoforigin. Avian Feed and Water AI adult birds snd thei offspring were given feed and watera libitum during acclimation and testing. The basal diet fd (0 bo adults and offspring was formulated to Willie Intemational, Ld `specifications by Agway Inc. (AppendixII, Table 1). The basalration contained at least 27% protein and 2.5% fat, andnomorethan 5% fiber "The basal dict contained approximately 1.1% calcium, derived from feedstuffs and the 0.9% limestone used inthe formulationofthe basal dit by Agway. While this levelofcalcium is sufficient for roth and maintenance rations, additonal calcium is required in the ration of breding birds for cg shell formation. Therefore, an additional 5% (w/w) of limestone (approximately 38.5% Ca) was added to the basal dict for the adult. This rised the calcium level in the dict for the breeding bids to `approximately 3%, slightly above the minimum recommended for quail (2.3%) and mallard (2.75%) (3). Offspring received basal die without test substance and without the addition of $% supplemental limestone `Water was supplied by th townofEaston public water supply.
