Production was in various areas of the facility. In 1949, a rupture disk in a production unit for sodium trichlorophenoxyacetic acid failed, spewing the contents of the vessel. Prod of operation: Monsanto manufactured 2,4-D, 2,4,5-T, parathion, and sodium trichlorophenol from 1948 until 1969. In 1972, the 2,4,5-T production building was demolished, decontaminated, and buried on-site. Population proximity: The facility is located on a 65-acre tract at the northern edge of Nitro. The plant is bordered by the Kanawha River on the west, light commercial or undeveloped acres to the north, commercial/residential areas to the east, and heavy chemical manufacturing to the south. The population of Nitro is approx. 8,000. Othr: production equipment for 2,4,5-T was also buried on-site. A teepee type incinerator was used to dispose of filters, clothes, dust bags, and other miscella neous materials. Much of the plant has been covered by loose gravel. The walls of TCP building have been replaced, but the basic structure still stands. Any known off*slt migration or contamination: Traces (less than 1 ppb) on Rt, 25 highway median for about 500 yards each direction. HI."
