Paugh, 512 Or c},ntinq Dttpt February 18, 1985 HS&EA Industrial Hygiene Asbestos Monitoring at Institute Plant Attached are the results of asbestos exposure monitoring conducted on January 4 and 8, 1935 while construction employees stripped a total of approximately 300 ft. of asbestos containing insulation from steam lines on the pipe rack just south of Bldg. 6. Six construction employees were used on the job with three insulators to strip the insulation and three laborers to bag and clean up the stripped insulation. All employees were protected by usage of cartridge respirators, coveralls, gloves, and boots. The work area was barricaded, signs posted, and a water spray was used. Use of the water spray was mandated in spite of the fact that the weather was rainy. All samples were found to contain levels of asbestos below the present permissible exposure limit of 2.0 fibers per c.c. of air. Several of the samples were found to contain higher levels of asbestos fibers than would have been expected. If the work had been performed over a longer period of time, it is likely that the fiber levels would have been proportionally greater. Although none of the samples exceeded the allowable limit, there could potentially be a problem if OSHA reduces the limit to 0.5 fibers per c.c. of air. It is possible that the water spray was not used as effectively as it could have been due to the assumption that the rain had already sufficiently soaked the insulation material. UCC 024495 G. W. Phares -2- February 18, 1985 Please notify all employees involved with the job of their exposure results.
