Moore____ (l) A division of this plant is engaged in making asbestos sheets for gaskets.- It is made up of 1C$ rubber and 9C5& asbestos fibre which is supplied by Asbestos Corp.. Ltd., Th'etford, Quebec. The operation is carried out in a room about 80' x AO' x 15* high. A batch of 100 lbs. of fibre is first mixed in a rotary mixer and later trans ferred to an extruder where rubber is added and the sheet, about 4n .thick, is extruded between two heated rollers. Both the mixer and the extruder are'provided with mechanically-exhausted canopies. Over 200 cfm of air velocity was found per square foot of opening.. About 10 batches are prepared per day and each one consumes approximately 20 minutes. This operation is carried out entirely by one man, C doing this work for about 12 years, and never wears a mask at work. JJHe has been Comments: 1. Although the mixing units arp well exhausted, the operator could be exposed to a heavy asbestos atmosphere when the fibres are first dumped into the mixer manually. 2. The'operator, C S.a.\ 3 has been under the supervision of Occupational Chest Unit since 1954. He is x-rayed-once every 18 months, and this routine examination will be continued. 3. Housekeeping is poor. Directions to' be issued:. 1. l The operator shall wear an approved type mask while preparing the batch. 2. Housekeeping shall be improved,.and a vacuum type cleaner should be used to clean the floor. Lead The company enquired about the ventilation requirement for a 4* x 4' lead pot in the. plant. It was pointed out that lead vapour would not reach a TLV level until it. is heated to- about 1,0Q0F. The normal operating temperature is about 700F. If a canopy is to be installed above the lead pot, normal rate of exhaust would be adequate, i.e. about 70 fpm per square foot of opening. JT:ec James To n a r> nnn
