September 1, 1987 AMIS'i H. W. Dietz ACTIVITIES REPORT FOR AUGUST, 1987 1. The Promac business group has received a one month extension of its two year conditional registration. This was granted because of delays in getting information from EPA on environmental fate test procedures. Results from these tests must be submitted to EPA before the end of this period to maintain our registration. Because of the activity of the Promac staff in this area, they have not been able to provide the information necessary for us to prepare a petition for Canadian pesticide registration. However, we are prepared to complete this activity as soon as the necessary information is provided. 2. The Geon Division has been planning a video on the safe use of PVC. We have provided input on various health issues and have assisted in developing the script. This month I met with the video producers and taped some state ments regarding the frequent confusion or association of VCM health effects with PVC. 3. A women's group in Louisiana has raised a concern about the purported high level of miscarriages and birth defects. This has led to press and TV coverage of chemicals "of concern" such as VCM. In response I am working to get the VI Medical Committee, which I chair, to develop a white paper which reviews and critiques the birth defect studies which have looked at VCM. 4. We have finally (emphasis added) received the draft language for the listing of our Koroseal wallcoverings in NYC. This information has been sent to the product group for its review. 5. I met with the SP&C staff this month to discuss toxicology testing needs for several new UV stabilizers. A PMN will be required for all and some may need FDA clearance in the future. A detailed list of toxicology studies was developed for review with Division management. 6. The final animal exposures to HC1 (pure gas and PVC generated) at SWRI will be completed during the next month and all post-exposure evaluation will be completed by the end of the year. I recently monitored one of the final guinea pig exposures to PVC under flaming conditions and reviewed the progress of this research. Efforts to publish these results are continuing. BFG19264 .7 One of the references which is frequently cited by Alarie and others as the level of HC1 which is lethal to man in 30 min. (1000-2000 ppm) is Henderson and Haggard (1943). Because this is a text and does not have any original data, I am reviewing all citations to determine if there is any fact to these values. My research so far has not revealed any hard data. However, I aim pursuing one reference to the Chemical Warfare Service which lists 5000 ppm as a lethal level for 30 minute exposures.
