FROM PITTSBURGH PURCHASING INDUSTRIAL - 19 TO MEMORANDUM October I4., 1972 RE: NATIONAL PURCHASE AGREEMENT.P-615951 JOHNS-MANVILLE SUPEREX INSULATION BLOCK Johns-Manvilie has completed their development of an asbestosfree high temperature insulation block. This is welcomed news in light of our concern on OSHA standards involving the handling of asbestos type materials. Beginning with October shipments, Johns-Manvilie will be filling all orders for Superex with either the present Superex material containing approximately 8# asbestos or the Asbestos-Free Superex. Until Johns-Manvilie*s entire production capacity has been converted to the asbestos-free material, many orders may be mixed with both types of insulation block. During this conversion period, the Asbestos-Free Superex cartons will be stenciled with the suffix AF (Superex 2000 AF) . When the transition is complete, the AF suffix will be dropped and all Johns-Manvilie Superex will be asbestos-free. Total conversion is expected on or before March 1, 1973* The new Asbestos-Free Superex has a maximum use temperature of 2000F and is superior to the present Superex with respect to both compressive strength and thermal conductivity. The transverse strength (modulus of rupture) of the new board is slightly less than that of the asbestos board, but this difference should have little effect on our applications. A copy of the properties of the new board is attached. For the balance of our agreement period for Superex, the price of the new board will be the same as that for the present formulation of Superex. However, because of the higher cost ingredients in the new board, a price increase for Superex may be imminent when the present agreement expires on December 31 1972. For all future releases of Superex, do not specify "asbestosfree". The new material will be fed into your orders on the basis of the supply on hand at the time of your release. 3ALCOA ARD 007024 Memorandum October U, 1972 Page 2 .We would appreciate your forwarding this information to your operating groups and, in particular, those concerned in policing OSHA standards.
