SECTION I AROCULOR fe PYRANO L M ATERIALS HANDLING BIPHENYL Biphenyl is a flam m able organic liquid received in tank c a r s from our Anniston, A lab am a plant. It is m elted and unloaded to sto ra g e tanks in Dept. 246. F ro m sto ra g e it is tr a n sfe r r e d by pipeline to the chlorinators via a head tank through an e sse n tially closed sy stem . Prolonged breathing of diphenyl dust or vapor can cause dam age to r e sp ir a to r y p a s s a g e s . F o r this re a so n avoid prolonged breathing of diphenyl vapor or w ear a re sp irato r or m ask if n e c e s s a r y to w ork fo r sh o rt p erio d s in stron g v a p o rs. A lw ays w ear goggles when tran sferrin g or sam pling biphenyl from tank c a r s o r sto ra g e tan ks. If m olten diphenyl is sp ille d on the Bkin it should be absorbed with a clean cloth and then w ashed with alcohol followed by copious quantities of w ater or if allowed to so lid ify it should be sc rap ed off and then w ashed fo r furth er treatm en t. If sp ille d on the clothing, change to clean clo th es. The flash point of Biphenyl is 115C. CHLORINE Chlorine gas is delivered by pipeline from the chlorine d ep art ment and is used to chlorinate diphenyl to produce the variou s aroclors. At tim es, leak s occur which w ill lib erate chlorine gas into the a ir . G as m ask s a re provided in D epartm ent 246 for use as p r o tection against chlorine gas. It is im p erativ e fo r the o p e ra to r to know the location of the g a s m ask s at a ll tim es and that he be fully acquainted with their use and lim ita tio n s. (In Dept. 246 a chlorine m a sk is kept in the control room at a ll tim es). If fo r som e reaso n you a re caught without a m ask and large amounts of chlorine are liberated, you can do nothing but hold your breath and move crossw in d as fa st as p o ssib le until you a re out of the g aseo u s a re a . Once you are out of the a re a , however, locate an em ergency chlorine m ask box and w ear the m a sk to retu rn to the a r e a and a s s i s t in c o r recting the trouble. The n earest chlorine m ask s outside of Dept. 246 are located as follow s: 1. O utside the building on the north end of Dept. P-222. 2. In the C hlorine C e ll H ouse, Dept. 234 3. Inside the Pow erhouse. NEV 024912 738167 Dept. 246 k A-246 - Operating Instructions SECTION I (Confd.) M ATERIALS HANDLING (Cont'd. ) CHLORINE (Cont'd.) The c a n iste rs of the chlorine m ask w ill ab sorb chlorine out of the a ir you breathe fo r v ary in g lengths of tim e depending on the strength of the g a s. As the c an ister lo se s its absorptive pow er, you w ill notice an in creasin g amount of gas in the a ir entering the m ask . Upon detecting these tra c e s of chlorine you should leave the a re a and obtain a fr e sh c a n iste r fo r the m ask . New c a n iste rs are available at the protective garm ent room . A fter using a m a sk , fill out the u sed g as m a sk fo rm found in sid e the g a s m a sk and m a il it to the S afety D epartm ent. They w ill au tom atically replace the gas m ask . Insofar as first aid for fum es from chlorine gas is concerned, the f ir s t thing to do is to rem ove the victim from the g aseou s a re a . The next thing is to take him to the d isp e n sa ry where proper aid can be ad m in istered . If the concentration of chlorine vapors are strong enough, inhalation can be fatal. HC1 GAS Hydrogen chloride gas is a by-product of the chlorination of diphenyl. The gas is c a rrie d v ia pipe line to Dept. F -2 1 8 and sew ered * In c a se of leak s and you a r e caught in an a r e a w here HC1 fum es have been liberated and you do not have a m ask , go crossw in d until you are out of the gaseou s a re a . Do not rem ain fo r any period of tim e in an a r e a where enough HC1 gas is p r e sent to cau se d isco m fo rt in breathing. If n e c e ssa ry to w ork tem p orarily in a gaseous are a , use a m ask with an acid c a n is te r. If irritatio n from HC1 fum es p e r sist, w ash thoroughly with w ater and report to d isp en sary . ATTAPULGUS EARTH Attapulgus earth is an in ert m ate rial and is handled in drum s o r buckets. T here should be no toxicity involved in handling this m aterial, but as a m atter of person al clean lin ess it should be w ashed from the skin o r brushed from the clothing after handling it. Do not blow it off your clothing with an a ir hose. This is against safety ru les. GLYCIDYL PHENOL ETH ER (Phenoxy Propene Oxide) G lycidyl Phenyl E th er is handled in d ru m s and tr a n sfe r r e d to p ro c e ss tanks in Dept. 246 as an ingredient of certain a ro c lo r m ix e s. UNLOADING TANK CARS Biphenyl, A ro c lo r s and P y ra n o ls a r e shipped in two types of in sulated tank c a r s , both of which are either aluminum lined or zin c-tin m etallized . One type of c a r has heating c o ils inside the tank which a r e in d ire c t con tact with the produ ct. The other type of c a r is a double sh ell tank with heating c o ils between the inner and outer sh ells. Both types of tank c a rs are tested for 60 pounds p re ssu re and their steam coils are tested fo r 200 ' pounds gauge p ressu re . B efore unloading Biphenyl or A ro c lo rs, it is n e c e ssa ry to heat it to pumping tem perature in the tank c a r (approxim ately 75 1 0 0 C , fo r a r o c lo r s 1254 and 1260), (biphenyl 75 - 90<>C). Pyranols can be unloaded satisfacto rily at tem peratures of 40 - 7 5 C . If the tem p eratu res of Biphenyl or A roclor c a r upon a rr iv a l is below pumping tem perature, caution m ust be used in heating the m a te ria l to prevent p re ssu re build-up and poaeible rupture of the tank sh ell. A sa tisfa cto ry vent hole can be m ade by inserting a "h air pin" coil (1 /2 " dia. b ra ss, galvanized, o r sta in le ss pipe) into the open dome of the c a r and introducing steam through the coil until the a ro clo r is fluid from top to bottom. A fter the vent hole is m elted through the m a te ria l from top to bottom, steam m ay be introduced into the m ain c o ils. The steam co il outlet m ay be trapped o r throttled with a valve. It is recom m ended that the steam p re ssu re s be lim ited to 100 pounds gauge p r e s su r e , p a rtic u la rly in the c a se where the co ils are in d irect contact with the aro clo r. The c a r dome should be co v ered with a clean tarpaulin or oil cloth during the heating period to prevent contam ination of the m ate rial with NEV 024915 738170 I D ept, 246 fc A -246 - O perating Instructinna SECTION I (C ont'd.) M ATERIALS HANDLING (Cont'd. ) UNLOADING TANK CARS (Cont'd. ) foreign p articles or m oistu re. The car dome cover should not be tightened since venting w ill occur during the heating period. It w ill req u ire fro m 8 hours to 20 hours to bring the m a te ria l to pumping te m p era tu re, depending upon w eather con dition s. A fter the tank c a r has been em ptied the steam co ils m ust be blown c le a r of w ate r. The c ap s fo r the ends of the stea m coil should not be replaced. A ro clo rs and P yranols are top-unloaded by displacem ent with dry a ir (10 m m g. I ^ O /c u . ft. m a x .) T h ere a re two o r three connections on the tank c a r dome depending on the type of c a r . Where three connections ex ist, one is a 2 inch diam eter un loading line which extends to the bottom of the c a r , the second is a 1 inch d ia m eter a ir in let connection and the th ird is a two inch d iam eter rupture disc which is designed to re le a se any p re ssu re in ex ce ss of 45 pounds gauge. The vent connection is hooded fo r p ro tectio n . W here only two connections e x is t on the dom e, one is the 2" d iam eter unloading line and the other is the sa fe ty vent. On th ese c a r s , it is n e c e s s a r y to rem ove the safety vent and introduce the displacem ent a ir through that connection. When unloading is com plete, a ll connections m u st be replaced as received . It is esse n tia l that the em pty tank c a r be se aled im m ediately after the c a r is unloaded in o rd er to keep the tank filled with dry a ir during return shipm ent. When the m a te r ia l has been heated to pumping te m p eratu re a 1 /2 " diam eter pipe " c r o s s '1 arrangem ent containing a p re ssu re gauge, a ir inlet, p re ssu re re lie f valve to relieve at 35 p sig or le s s if none is provided on the c a r , and vent connections, should be connected to the dom e a ir p ip e. A fter checking to se e that the stand pipe is open, the unloading line should be connected and the dome cov er tightened down so that the tank m ay be p re ssu riz e d . Dry a ir is then introduced into the c a r and p r e s s u r e built up to 15 pounds gau ge. The 2 " v alve cock on the standpipe is opened and the d isch arg e pipe observed to be su re the A ro c lo r is being unloaded. Do not ex ceed 35 pounds p re ssu re to protect the se am s in the tank c a r. When the tank c a r is em pty, the a ir p r e s s u r e w ill g rad u ally drop off and a ir w ill blow out the vent on the receiving tank. The a ir m ay be stopped at this point and the tank c a r p r e s su re r e le a s e d through the vent v alve on the " c r o s s " a r r a n g e ment. Steam should be re le a se d from the c a r co ils and all 5. 0^^916 738171 Dept. 246 8t A-246 - Operating Instructions SECTION I (Cont'd) M ATERIALS HANDLING (Cont'd. ) UNLOADING TANK CARS (C on t'd .) condensate rem oved from the co ils by blowing with a ir with the steam trap b y -p assed . A fter inspecting the c a r to be su re that it has been com pletely unloaded, all connections and dome cover should be closed tightly before being released for the return trip. UNLOADING DRUMS OF FLAM M ABLE M ATERIAL When drum s of flam m able m a te ria l a re being unloaded each drum m ust be grounded by a "clam p on" cable which prevents sparking due to a static electricity .
