Bloomberg, the U.N. special envoy for cities and climate change, submitted to the United Nations Framework Convention for Climate a joint statement today signed by more than 1,000 business leaders, mayors, governors and others committed to upholding the deal. In the coming months, he says he will work with any interested officials to "formally quantify" what kind of greenhouse gas emissions could be achieved at the state and local level, in the private sector, and at universities or nonprofits. The statement, known as "We are Still Im" includes the governors of California and New York; executives at tech giants like Google and Apple; and the mayors of Houston, home to many major oil companies, and of Pittsburgh, which Trump mentioned in his speech assailing the Paris deal. They declare Trump's exit "a grave mistake that endangers the American public and hurts America's economic security and diplomatic reputation." The joint statement and Bloomberg announcement comprise early steps in what will be complex discussions between the different entities to work out carbon accounting from such different entities. Separately, a dozen states and Puerto Rico have launched the U.S. Climate Alliance to coordinate their efforts to cut emissions.
