MonsantoTRANSFORMER COOLANT BY
Pyroclor it Monnnto'i brand name for ita fir* reilttant trantformar atkaral. Tha tarm "atkaral", at dafinad by ASTM, ganarally datcribaa a broad cltat of fira rathitant tynthetlc chlorinated hydrocarbon llquidt utad at aiactrieal intulatlon madia in trantformart. Trantformar atkartlt wtrt flrtt utad in tha United Statat in 1932 and incorporate chlorinated biphenyl -- one of tha beat liquid Intulatlon material! aver developed. Thit Inert material It chemically liable, fire retittant, heat itable, non-corrodve and hat high dielectric ttrength under the operating condition! encountered in trantformara. In Europe, atkaral trantformart form a large percentage of the dlftribution trantformart inetalled today. In Franca, ana third of the dittributlon trantformart brought into ttrvice each year are of thit typo.
PYROCLOR 6 Thit la tha recommended fluid for all Pyroclor-filled trantformart operating at normal ambient temperature condition!. Should tpedal operating condition! be envitaged, plaaaa contult with Monaanto -- It may be pottible to provlda a modified product

Advantages of Pyroclor
1. Pyroclor it vary flrt resistant. It resists ignition and tatts hava shown it dost not bum continuously as a result of tranaformar arcing.
2. Pyroclor-fillad traniformars naad no spacial fire precautions as part of tha transformsr installation.
3. Pyroclor-fillad transformers offer greater siting flexibility, particularly whare space is limitsd. They can be locatad indoors, dote to working areas or at tha load centra.
4. Properly sealed Pyrodor-fllled transformer* require little or no maintenance of the fluid over many years of service.
5. Its permittivity it such that tha distribution of electrical avast in the transformer It more uniform.

Storage, Handling and Disposal of Pyroclor
CAUTION: Pyroclor contilns POLYCHLORINATED BIPHENYLS (PCM which iome ctudlcc have diown may be persistant, an anvlronmantal con taminant and, possibly, injurloui to oartaln forme of bird, aquatic and animal Ufa. Storage Inalde storage of drums Is recommended to avoid moisture oontaminatlon. If drums have to be stored outside they should be stacked on their sides with bungs uppermost to prevent moisture being auekad in by breathing. Partially emptied drums should not be left open to the air. The supply of Pyroclor In bulk offers many advantages to medium and large users. Unloading, storing and transferring to the production unit 1s safer, easier end cheaper. Material losaas due to apiHaga and Incomplete emptying of drums Is minimised. The possibility of product contamination during handling is greatly reduced. Evan where storage and handling facilities are not atpresentavailable, the eoonomics of bulk handling may quickly pay for the tanks and piping systems required. A booklet indicating the typo of system necessary, Is available from Monsanto and experienced Monsanto personnel are available for site discussion regarding the moat suitable bulk installation and off-loading procedure. It it essential that both drum and bulk storage areas should bo organised to that leakages and tplllagtt can be collected for safe disposal.

Handling
Transformer askerel haa baan mada, handlad and uaad for ovar 40 years. It can ba handlad aafaly If a law timpla precautions m observed.
1. Minimise contact with tha skin by using glovas and othar protactlva clothing.
Ramova accidantal skin contamination at toon at practicable by thorough washing with toap and water. Short term exposure it unlikely to causa harm except to vary sensitive skin, but long (arm exposure should ba avoided. Ramova saturated clothing and do not ra-uta until dry-cleaned.
2. Protect ayaa with goggles.
Accidental aye contact may result In painful Irritation but no permanent damage to tissue, if Pyrodor gets in tha ayes, flush with targe amounts of water. As with all eye-first-aid, refer to a qualified physician. To relieve irritation, ophthalmic anaesthetic solution, ophthalmic cortisone acetate solution, or castor oil may be used under qualified supervision.
3. Avoid breathing Pyroclor vapour, mitt or fumes.
infrequent exposure to Pyroclor vapour is unlikely to causa III effects, but prolonged exposure to high vapour concentrations mutt ba avoided. At normal ambient temperature, in wall vantilatad areas, tha concentration of Pyroclor will be below that likely to causa harm. For handling hot Pyroclor in a confined space, a respirator with an active carbon canister should be worn.
4. Do not eat, drink, or smoke whan handling Pyroclor. Although Pyroclor it not particularly toxic when ingestad orally, this simple precaution will minimise hazard.

Disposal of Pyrodor Waste Where ponible the deetruetion of Pyrodor weete thouId be eccomplidled through carefully controlled high temperature incineration. Thit requires a special incineration facility providing a suitable balance between temperature, dwell-time, oxygen and auxiliary fuel and provision for removal of hydrochloric add gas from the gasaaous emissions. This facility must also make provision for handling the waste which may range from mobile fluid to solid. Impregnated with Pyrodor.* if such a facility does not exist, aibject to the provisions of local regulations, the waste diould be consigned to a waste disposal she designated for toxic materials. Do not use empty Pyrodor drums except for waste Pyrodor. Before dbposal they should be thoroughly drained and then hushed twice with kerosene type solvent. The solvent should be incinerated and the washed drums consigned to a waste disposal site. Alternatively incinerate unwashed drums in a suitable incinerator. During handling and disposal of waste Pyrodor take great care to avoid pollution, particularly of drains and waterways.

I. Inhalation At ordinary ttmparaturaa tha chlorinatad biphanyla In takaral have not praiantad Industrial toxicological problems. Tha hazard of potantial toxic axpoiura varlas with thair volatility; tha lower chlorinatad, mot* volatile ones present more of a potantial problem from the standpoint of both inhalation and skin contact. When askarel fluids are used at elevated temperatures, engineering controls must be applied, either by the use of closed systems or by effective local exhaust ventilation together with general work' room exhaust.
Vapours of atkaral at room temperature should not be breathed in a confined space and no vapour of any fluid evolved at elevated temperatures should be allowed to be dispersed into the general workroom.
Inhalation testa on animals Indicate that the maximum safe con* cantration of vapour it in the range from 0.6 to 1.0 milligramme per cubic metre of eir. The threshold limit value (maximum allowable concentration of an 8-hour working day) set by the American Conferenca of Governmental Hygienists is 1.0 milli gramme of the lower-chlorinated biphenyl compounds par cubic metre of air and 0.6 milligramme of the more-hlghly-chlorinetad compounds, per cubic metre of air.
II. Skin Contact
Prolonged or repeated skin contact with tha askarel fluids must be avoided by the use of gloves end protective germents, beceuse of the possible occurrence of a condition called chloracne. Although reports of this condition caused by askarel are rare. It can be produced by excessive ddn contact. If the fluid Is spilled on the skin, tha skin should be washed in the usual manner with a soap solution.
A burn caused by contact with a hot askarel should be treated like any ordinary burn.
