March 13, 1969 Mr. Jule Gordon, Chairman Committee of the Progressive Hair Dye Industry Room 510, 60 East 42nd Street New York, New York 10017 Dear Mr. Gordon: I am sending herewith two copies of each of two bills, the total of which will cover our expenditures (in salaries, fees and supplies) together with the customary overhead charges of the Kettering Laboratory. I have put these charges on two invoices for the reason that the funds go to two separate Departments. If you will be good enough to issue two checks, one to the Department of Dermatology, University of Cincinnati, and the other to the Kettering Laboratory, University of Cincinnati, it will save a considerable amount of trouble within this Department and the University financial circle. Of course, it can be done otherwise, but the proposal I make to you simplifies matters, and if you don't object. I'll appreciate your handling it thus. In your letter of February 20, you raise the question of a contribution to the Kettering Laboratory. I appreciate greatly your interest in this, and I take it as arising out of some degree of feeling of gratitude to the Laboratory for what has been done for your group. But I believe your own attitude has somewhat greater depth in the impression that the type of work the Laboratory is doing deserves encouragement and the means of doing more and better work. That is what I hope will be the attitude of those generally for whom we have attempted to serve as well as we are able. Despite the breadth of my view, of this matter, and its hope for the future, I am not thinking of correspondingly monumental gifts, but of an attitude that would pervade enough of industry to provide the f&el for continued efforts, and their appropriate (conservative) expansion. In the case of your group, I will encourage and welcome any contribution which you may care to make at any time you Choose. My present advice to you, however, is to let this issue rest until we have found out what, if anything further, the Food and Drug Administration requires of you by way of additional information. I hope they are satisfied, but I don't believe we can be entirely certain that they are. If you are of the same mind, perhaps you will let me know how you or I or we should go about finding out.
