Grylls: Herewith I acknowledge with thanks your letter of October 2j5 concerning the East Chicago plant. You are quite right in your feeling that I have some knowledge of this p l a n t , but it has been a long time since I was there. At that time we made quite a number of observations and cei*tain general recommendations. However, I have no knowledge of what was actually done to reduce the hazards of the various jobs, and it seemed likely to me that a sizable number of changes had taken place in a number of respects. For aught I knew the whole situation had altered since my acquaintance with It. From the contents of your letter it appears that my supposition was correct with reference to general changes. I shall be very much interested in noting the results of analyses in connection with case histories, and it may be that we shall have some recommendations to make with reference to the lead exposure of individuals or occupational groups that come to our attention through this means . It would be helpful in this connection if we were to receive information along with individual records giving us some idea of the number of persons engaged In the occupation in question, the length of time oyer which Indi viduals in the group had been employed, and the conditions prevailing at the time of the examination requested with respect to the apparent adequacy of the hygienic control. These are details which it seems likely that Dr. Beam will be able to answer for us in such a way as to give the Information that will, be most useful in the interpretation of the situation existing. W e shall be.glad to assist you in dealing with problems that arise as well as we can, and therefore as complete information as possible will be advantageous both to yourselves and to us.
