" " - -..-ii . Prolonged exposure to hoary concentrations of airborne asbestos fibers has been linked to increased incidences of asbestosia, lung cancer and mesothelioma. You have a right to request information from the Personnel Department regarding toxic substances in the work place . Reduotion of airborne aBbestos dust reduoes the risk to workers. Testing by OSHA, Xentlle and our insurance company have consistently shown the asbestos dust level in our plant to be well below the limit eat by OSHA of 2 fibers per cubic oentimeter of air over an 8 hour work day. Asbestos dust and related illness can be attacked in three main ways -- work practices, exhaust and collection systems, and air moni toring and medical exams. WORE PRACTICES: (1} Don't smoke -- it greatly increases the chance of asbestos related disease, (2) Avoid unnecessary dust when weighing asbestos from bags and handle them carefully. (3) Asbestos weighers must wear their dust masks properly and rotate every Ij. hours. (4.) Remove dust from your clothes with a vacuum cleaner -- do not use an airhose. {} Keep your work clothes separate from your street clothes by using the two lockers provided. (6 ) Work clothes containing asbestos should be well rinBed in the wash tub on the premises before bringing them horns to be cleaned. (7) Do not bring food or drink into the work area or locker rooms. (8 ) Wash your hands before eating and at the end of the work day. EXHAUST AND COLLECTION SYSTEMS; There are exhaust systems at the asbestos scale and banburys. These exhausts draw loose fibers into the collection system. Report any exhaust problems to your foreman immediately. AIR MONITORING AND MEDICAL EXAMS: Air monitoring is performed every six monthB to assure that asbeetos levels are within permissible levels. Annual medical examinations are given to the Scale Men and Banbury Operators -- this includes chest x-rays and breathing tests. SAFETY AND HEALTH IS EVERYONE'S RESPONSIBILITY.
