Wilson subject OSHA Regulation-1910-93 Handling of Asbestos Effective Date of Regulation, July 7, 1972 ADDRESS HOUStOn ADDRESS Houston DATE July 7, 1972 Pursuant to my conversation today with you and, after study of the Act and its provisions, I would state that the following methods of handling asbestos insulation would be well within the standards of OSHA. 1. Bagged Asbestos: "Shorts-Plaster and etc." Tears and rips should be sealed, spills should be vacuumed. After initial cleanup of afea, and sealing no special equipment would be required for handling. (Bags should always be sealed.) 2. Formed Asbestos: All men handling unsealed formed asbestos should wear gloves, approved respirators that fit. They should be required to bathe at the end of each working day and to send the clothes, worn, handling asbestos, to the Laundry at the end of the work day. Possi bly you should explore the ideas of wrapping formed asbestos with brown paper for handling and shipping. OSHA regulations require that all men handling asbestos be advised that "five fibers of more than 5 micrometers in length of asbestos per cubic centimeter of air" is the allowable level to work in without specialized equipment... and of the general health hazard of asbestos.
