The exhaust at the screening operation in the Gooch plant ljaa been markedly improved and local exhaust has been added to the system beTa**flexible exhaust duct which can be placed either at the table where small containers are filled or at the box next to the vibrating screen. The operator in this area wears his respirator when he is adding asbestos to the vibrating screens and also as he fills the small packages. This is necessary, since a large amount of asbestos is airborne during these operations* When the asbestos is finally placed on the vibrating screen, a very small amount of dust enters the room. The acid washed asbestos is prepared out of doors in crocks to which 20% hydro chloric acid is added and allowed to remain in contact with the asbestos for about 24 hours. This operation may be changed in the near future to a reflex condensing operation. The asbestos thus washed is then taken in doors where it is washed with water. During the operation in which hydrochloric acid is used, the workmen wear rubber gloves which are removed when the acid - is washed from the asbestos* Construction work is being undertaken around the plant for expansion of opera tions and a new rod mill is being installed with a dust collecting system; also a new dryer with automatic feed. .The. new operation being installed will include a crusher, dryer, and rod mill all enclosed and exhaust, ventilated and automatically operated insofar as is possible. The expansion program is expected to be completed some time about June of this year. A return visit should be made when this new operation is completed and in service. Smith from whom we learned that there are 10 employees working at the present time. The housekeeping of the plant has been consider ably improved; the asbestos rock is neatly piled; andjthe open floor spaces reasonably clean. In the screening building, it was noted 7%*%the screens had been enclosed more than they had been and this serves to more effectively capture the asbestos dust. The screening operator, and the person packing small lots, appears to be very faithful in wearing the respirator. The expansion program is still under way and awaits the receipt of several pieces of additional equipment. HEC:RF - 10/1/57
