Update on Survey and Sampling Efforts 1. Survey Andrew Hartten infonned the group that the door-to-door survey was complete. In circumstances where the residents were not home, the survey team revisited the location three times and then left the survey in the mailbox with instructions to mail it to Dave Watkins. Dave Watkins indicated that at the Tcimant residence, he did not recall which Tcnnant or the address, the survey team visited the house three times and while it appeared that someone was home because the television was on, no one answered the door. He also noted that there were dogs in the yard. The survey team left a note to call Dave Watkins and Dave Watkins indicated that the survey or sampling teams would not return to this location until the Tennant's call him. Andrew Hartten indicated that Potesta and Associates is maintaining the database of survey and sampling information. 2. Sampling Andrew Hartten reported that the sampling is 90% complete. The remaining sampling points include deep wells and some shallow wells and cisterns. To sample the deep wells, which are from 160 to 420 feet deep, the GIST is contracting wilh a drilling company. The remaining shallow wells and cisterns have not been sampled due to scheduling difficulties. The sampling is expected to be completed by February 18,2002. All public water supplies("PWS") originally scoped for sampling have been sampled. The GIST is scheduled to sample wells at Blennerhasset Island on January 30,2002. Three additional PWS's have requested sampling and the GIST will conduct sampling at these PWSs under the Phase I sampling activities. The PWSs that have requested sampling are the City of Belpre,J'uppers Plain, and Belleville. ASH016096 EID230888 B. Overview of Preliminary Results Andrew Hartten indicated that the final analytical reports have been received for approximately 50% of all offsite samplescollected. The GIST intends to communicate die sampling results once all the final analytical reports have been received. However, it was bdicated that the Little Hocking PSD results were communicated because of the levels. With regards to additional sampling at Little Hocking PSD, Andrew Hartten indicated that the following wells were sampled last week: production wells, nine monitoring wells and finished water samples from storage tanks. Garth Connor asked whether there was an explanation for the higher concentrations detected at Little Hocking. Andrew Hartten indicated that DuPont has assembled a team of experts to develop a list of potential sources and to systematically evaluate these sources. These sources include ground-water, surface water and air deposition. Andrew Hartten stated that there is no data to indicate whether the aquifer is present under the river and that the GIST should identify information to get a better understanding of the aquifer. It was mentioned that the Corps of Engineers might have data relating to the aquifer. Dave Watkins indicated that they have obtained information from the Little Hocking PSD's engineer that includes well logs for the production wells and the wellhead protection plan. Mr. Wafkins also stated that the groundwater transport theory as a source is uncertain given the fact that DuPont is withdrawing ten times more grouodwater than Little Hocking. On the issue of surface water, Andrew Hartten indicated that the GIST is developing a plan for surface water sampling that will include an emphasis on Little Hocking to determine transport due to the river. On the issue of air deposition effects on groundwater, Dave Watkins indicated that his office is going to work with the DEP's Division of Air Quality to study this issue, Dave Watkins also stated that he got a call from a woman who lives within die one-mile radius of the plant and has a swimming pool. This woman stated that Ifae water to the pool becomes cloudy and a mold forms on the surface after it rains during the summer, Andrew Hartten also indicated that water from cistems wilhin the one-mile radius of the plant have C-8 concentrations between 1 and 3 micrograms per liter. The cisterns collect water from the roof and are generally used to wash cars and water gardens. Dr. Staats suggested taking wipe samples ftom buildings in Little Hocking to determine the presence of C-8. It was also suggested dial soil $amples be taken near the wells at Little Hocking but it was stated that the GIST has no authority to do so under the Consent Order and because it is in Ohio il is outside the DBF's jurisdiction. Andrew Hartten reported that the 90% of the results ftom the Dry Run and Letart area are non-defect and that no results are above 1 microgram per liter. C. Additional Work ASH016097 EID230B89 1- HistoricaLR&SBlfjsummarv (GIST Task B) Andrew Hartten reported that samples were collected at the three landfills in December 2001 and the December monthly report should be completed by February 1,2002. The January 2002 samplingwas performed this week. Mr. Hartten reported that monthly sampling at Washington Works commenced in December 2001. Mr. Hartten reported that plan for sampling surface water from the river is being developed and should be completed by February 8 2002. Mr. Hartten informed the GIST that mis plan would be submitted to the GIST electronically. Mr. Hartten stated mat the compilation of ofrsite data would commence once the analytical results from the Phase I sampling have been received. He anticipates receiving the final analytical results by March 1,2002. Mr. Hartten stated mat me next GIST meeting should be a face-to-face meeting so that the team can discuss data gaps and determine the next steps in me investigation. On the issue of the sampling at Washington Works, George Dasher asked whether it would be possible to obtain samples from the area in the middle of the plant and referenced N13 and 0-13. Mr. Hartten stated that be Thoughtthat this was possible. The GIST discussed the issue of communicating the analytical results to the homeowners. Dr. Staats stated mat she would like to wail until the CAT/TERA screening level is developed so that bom the sampling results and screening level could be announced iti a letter, which would also provide notice of a public meeting to explain the results and screening level. Dr. Staats stated that TERA is currently reviewing the toxicity information and the CAT team may raeet in mid to late February, Dr. Staats indicated that the screening level may be available by early March but she was uncertain whether the screening level could be announced before the completion of the final report by TERA.
