COMMENTS AND RECOMMENDATIONS :
Discussed in great details the recent results of testing of P-105-D and P-105-E for their Japanese business. Ernie sat in at the meeting with Warren and went over the plates as tested from this recent submission of production paper. The original test on the first coil sent in proved very, very successful. They ran into problems later, however, which were quite contradictory in that paper taken from the same rolls showed very good results on one set of rings while paper taken from the same rolls showed poor results on another set of rings. Since they were getting two different results from the same roll of paper I suggested that they are on the razor line of acceptability and sometimes fell over this line into unacceptable plates.
The P-105-E looked good throughout except for one slight flake-off which was acceptable in the contacts of all the rings, it was

decided to run the next 20,000 or 25,000 pounds as P-105-E and if this reduction of diatomaceous earth gave them the difference, they wish to accentuate this difference by having at least one roll run with even less diatomaceous earth.
They did show me some plates made up from the Japanese paper which looked a great deal worse than even our unacceptable paper from P-105-D. They asked if we could keep the basis weight pretty uniform in running the P-105-D since, out of 6,000 pounds of P-105-D only 4,000 pounds was shipped due to high basis weight. Of this 4,000 pounds, 14 coils couldn't be used due to high basis weight tunning 138 pounds whereas specification was 110 to 130 pounds.
Warren also showed a great deal of concern about asbestos and health restrictions since they are getting pressure from Hydramat ic. Their facilities check out all right as far as asbestos .nd health is concerned but asked that we check with our people and asbestos supplier to see if we could insure our compliance. The suggestion was made that we might be able to obtain asbestos in poly bags which would be dissolvable in water. I contacted Warren as to Don Moffatt's suggestion on taking 1/4" to 3/8" $ of ragged edge from the two end rolls to eliminate our slitting il of this material. He was immediately pessimistic about this as to how it would feed into his die-cutter but I told him to check it out and I would see him next Friday and if it looks like it is in the realm of possibility that it would work okay on their i equipment, I will arrange to have a rqll of each grade sent in for their testing. I will also point out that there will be no penalty or extra charge to them since we will compute what percentage extra weight this would be and credit them accordingly. I 1 also identified and discussed with Warren the roll of 650-W which was run to the lower caliper. This was a more densified sheet with extra binder to bring up the mullen. Hopefully, this will result in better torque for Borg-warner and better running conditions for Mead. This was roll No. 38 from Lot J-8841 made up 11/26/72.
