Agricultural gypsum plays a substantial role in the Farming Industry. Modern growers know that gypsum flocculates soil and provides needed minerals. As a soil conditioner, BESTWALL Agricultural Gypsum, processed from pure gypsum rock, breaks up hard soils to allow proper aeration and water penetration. Aeration im proves seed germination and rooting; thus, increasing overall crop yields. Greater water absorption prevents wet spots and root rot. As a fertilizer, BESTWALL Agri cultural Gypsum's high solubility makes its nutrients readily available to the plants. Thus, by improving the soil's tilth and giving nutrients to plants, BESTWALL Agricul tural Gypsum helps generate greater yields of high quality crops.
Surface crusted soils need gypsum's booster action to make them loose and porous. Applied any time of the year, highly soluble gypsum works into the soil and stimulates microbiological ac tivity. Light soils gain body, while heavy soils are lightened. BESTWALL Agricultural Gypsum may be broadcast and filled in at the rate of 1 ton every two acres.

Tests indicate that many plants, par ticularly of the forage and legume types, respond quickly to gypsum. BESTWALL Agricultural Gypsum boosts plant protein and chlorophyll produc tion and helps develop stronger roots by supplying plants with quickly avail able calcium and sulphur in a nonalkaline form. Gypsum, because of its solubility, increases the effectiveness of phosphate fertilizers. Crops, such as alfalfa, clover, peas, beans and pea nuts require large amounts of calcium and sulphur to insure maximum yields.

BESTWALL Agricultural Gypsum retards nitrogen losses in manure. A sprinkling of gypsum over manure and in dairy barn gutters will result in an appre ciable reduction in nitrogen loss, in the soil, gypsum helps plant assimilation of water-borne and air borne nitrogen.

Gypsum stimulates micro-organisms, es sential in mushroom culture. BESTWALL
Agricultural Gypsum, when evenly dis persed throughout the compost, insures proper aerotion for good growth of mushroom mycelia, conditions the com post and accelerates the composting period. Apply BESTWALL Agricultural Gypsum at a rate of 30 to 40 lbs. per ton of manure at the beginning of composting and 15 lbs. per ton at the last turn of the compost.

BESTWALL Agricultural Gypsum helps keep livestock buildings clean and dry. When sprinkled over manure, gypsum controls harmful ammonia fumes. Gyp sum has no caustic effects on the feet of farm animals and is safe to use in drying up barn and stable floors.

BESTWALL Agricultural Gypsum is an economical means of clearing muddy ponds. It agglomerates suspended clay, so permitting it to settle out. Applica tion from a rowboat is recommended to insure even distribution throughout a pond.
To calculate the amount of gypsum necessary for clearing a pond, locate the deepest spot, estimate the average depth as being % of the greatest depth. Multiply the average depth by the area in sq. ft. This will give the amount of water in cubic feet. Most ponds require 12 lbs. of gypsum per 1000 cu. ft. for clearing. If clay par ticles do not settle out, add an addi tional 4 lbs. per 1000 cu. ft.

Chapter V
A fine ground pure gypsum is used by many yeast manufacturers as a yeast accelerator or food as it very notably' speeds up the action of the yeast in baking. Thus, there is a small amount of gypsum in the bread and yeast that we consume.
Black board crayrons or chalk are sometimes made of a finely ground uncalcined white gypsum rock. A binder and sometimes a pigment for coloring purposes are added and the mixture molded into the required shape under pressure, host crayons, however, are made from calcined gypsum which is mixed with water and " \ cast into a mold, the setting of the plaster giving the required hardness and -' strength.
Rock gypsum is used as a flux in reducing lead ores and in the smelting of some of the nickel ores in Canada where it furnishes the sulphur necessary' ^ to form a nickel rnatte and to slag the siliceous ore.
