CLAYTON, Jr. \ Haskell Laboratory '-------------------------- " Wilmington, Delaware August 16, 1962 ORAL TOXICITY - TUBE COLORANTS RE: MEDICAL RESEARCH PROJECT MR-620 Confirming our 8/13 conversation and in connection with the Federal Hazardous Substances Labeling Act, it is requested that oral toxicity tests (as specified by regulation to the act) be conducted on five lead containing colorants. The products are normally packaged in collapsible tubes in j. 1, and 4 ounce sizes and, obviously, this limits the amount of lead available from a single tube. On this basis, we may find that the small tube sizes are not toxic under the law even if bulk material is found to be toxic. The products involved and the calculated weight of lead per fluid ounce of colorant, based on existing manufacturing formulas and raw material specifications, are shown below: Code -632-774 --632-775 Tito 632-776 y3f3 - 632-777 529-931 Pounds perGrams Pb NameGallon /per fl.oz. If, after examining the compositions, it is obvious that the products are in fact toxic in the amounts available in individual tubes, there will, of course, be no need to conduct the tests. Haskell Lab. work conducted in connection with this request should be charged to MR-620., < JOHNSON FTj/mdm BETTER THINGS FOR BETTER LIVING . . . THROUGH. CHEMISTRY
