SARGENT AS COMPTROLLER OF PHILADELPHIA., ATLANTIC BRANCHES Archer D Sargent, assistant comptroller of the Company, has relinquished the position of comptroller of the Atlantic and Philadelphia branches, so that he can devote full time to duties of a company-wide nature John W. Ferguson, assistant comptroller of the Philadelphia Branch since 1949, becomes the new comptroller of these branches^ ( Mr Ferguson t^gair his Company career at Philadelphia, serving in various departments at the plant before being transferred to the main office in 1941 as cashier He did cost and inventory work from 1944 until 1946, when he became an accountant Two years later Mr Ferguson became chief accountant and in 1949 assistant to the branch comptroller EXPANDED FACILITIES AT ST LOUIS TITANIUM PLANT ANNOUNCED The Company will begin construction immediately of new facilities for the pro duction of titanium dioxide at St Louis The additional capacity, about 36,000 tons a year as Ti02, will be added on top of expansions three years ago at both the Sayreville, NJ and St Louis, Missouri, titanium pigment plants It is expected that the new production will begin in July 1955, with the new facilities in full operation by the end of the year Heretofore the St Louis plant has been restricted to the production of calcium- base titanium pigments (Titanox-C) The new facilities are so designed as to permit greater manufacturing flexibility as they can be vised for the production of either calcium-base or pure pigment, and can be switched at will as demand for one type of pigment might exceed the other Since the demand for titanium pigments has been growing steadily over a period of many years, the Company is again expanding production capacity in order to assure adequate supplies and prompt deliveries of both types of titanium pigment The St Louis plant, which started operations in 1923, currently employs about 1200 workers After expansion is completed, 300 more will be added The construction work itself will use about 500 on a temporary basis ST0PF0RD TO DIRECT CANADIAN, OVERSEAS TITANIUM INTERESTS Charles J Stopford has joined National Lead Company, effective July 1, with the primary responsibility of directing the Company* s titanium pigment and related interests in Canada aid. overseas He will make his headquarters in the New York office of the Titanium Division Mr Stopford has been appointed executive vice-president of Titan Company, Inc, vice-president of Canadian Titanium Pigments, Ltd, and vice-president of Titanium Pigment Export Corporation He has served British Titan Produots Company, Ltd, York, England, as managing director since 1939 and prior to that was connected with Imperial Chemical Industries, Ltd, in London, England Erik Anker continues in direct charge of titanium pigment and associated operations .n Europe, with headquarters in Fredrikstad, Norway - over - 0000-NLI-000024805 :*' " '' : -' 1 ' '' _' : , -2- .......... NEW HEADQUARTERS A?SAIVILLE TEST' STAflON~OPENTO....... ~ The new headquarters building of the Company's Experimental Test Station in Sayville, Long Island, New York, has been opened officially* The new building contains offices and paint shops for the station-. The Sayville station was established in 1917 to provide facilities for making careful, scientific and impartial studies of various paint materials. The written records of paint materials behavior on Sayville's test fences represent the largest continuous testing experience available to the industry in the United States, This set of case history books now amounts to more than 500 volumes. The twenty-acre tract is occupied by test fences. There are also several workshops in addition to the new headquarters building. All told, there are fiftythree test fences on the property, and since each fence is 120 feet long and is used on both sides, nearly 2 miles of test fence are available. As many as 30,000 tests may be going on at the same time. At the marine station on Great South Bay near Sayville, a system of exposures has been developed which simulates conditions encountered on a ship. Test racks have been designed so that exposures can be made at complete immersion, half tide and two feet above water. This corresponds with the bottom of the hull, the water line area and the ship5s superstructure, COMPANY OPERATING AEC LABORATORIES IN WINCHESTER, MASSACHUSETTS The Company has been awarded a contract for operation of the U,S, Atomic Energy Commissionr,s Raw Materials Development Laboratories in Winchester, Massachusetts, effective July.1, The Raw Materials Development Laboratory is concerned principally with develop ment of processes for treatment of uranium-bearing ores to the point where they can be utilized for production of uranium concentrates. The laboratory has become an important part of the Atonic Energy Commission11 s program to increase production of uranium concentrates, LARGEST DIE-CASTING MACHINE ANNOUNCED FOR DOEHLER-JARVIS DIVISION Completion of the largest die-casting machine ever built was announced by the Company on June 29, The machine, located in Doehler-Jarvis Division Plant 2 in Toledo, represents a joint development of Doehler-Jarvis and Kaiser Aluminum & Chemical Corporation, It was conceived five years ago as a means of providing the automotive industry more and larger aluminum die castings and required more than two years to construct. The machine is capable of turning out aluminum die castings weighing up to 75 pounds. Whan adapted to zinc use, castings up to 200 pounds are contemplated. By previous die-casting standards, zinc parts up to 15 pounds and aluminum of 20 pounds were considered practically maximum. Weighing 200 tons, this huge machine will handle dies weighing up to 50 tons, APPOINTMENTS ANNOUNCED AT THE CHAS, TAILOR SONS COMPANY The following appointments have been announced at The Chas, Taylor Sons Co,: Edward Budde, Sr. has been named production manager, Mr, Budde has worked continuously at Taylor's Cincinnati plant since 1915 He started as a pattern maker. Hr, Whitfield obtained a degree in ceramic engineering from the University of Illinois in 19itl* After graduation he worked for Apex Electric Company* He joined Chas. Taylor in 19U6 as a ceramic engineer, and became assistant superintendent of the Cincinnati plant in July of last year. f Addison Haupin has been appointed assistant to the president Re was graduated in ceramic engineering at North Carolina State College in 1938. Following graduation he worked for General Refractories Company and Republic Steel Corporation. Mr. Haupin was employed by Chas. Taylor in 1951 as a special development engineer, BOAND IN NEW POSITION AT TITANIUH METALS CORPORATION OF AMERICA Jules F. Boand, Jr., has been appointed Pacific Coast manager of sales and technical services for Titanium Metals Corporation of America. On August 1 he will assume full responsibility for operations of the Los Angeles office, located at 5333 S'- Slauson Avenue. Mr. Boand received his B.S. in mechanical engineering from the Illinois Institute of Technology in 19ii8. After five years of employment as a sales engineer for the Chicago Branch, he joined the home office sales staff of Titanium Metals in New York City. KEHOE APPOINTED TRADE SALES MANAGER, ATLANTIC BRANCH William H. Kehoe has been appointed trade sales manager of the Atlantic Branch. Mr. Kehoe was employed by the Sherwin-Williams Company and Modene Paint Company be fore coming to the Company last year as assistant to the manager, pigment division of the Atlantic Hranch.
