Lane August 22. 1975 Medical Department 4 Dear Mr. Frankenberger: A special industrial hygiene survey was made on August 13, 1975 to follow up on the asbestos in air problems associated with the acetylene cylinder manufacturing operations. The series of samples obtained during the second quarter indicated an increase in the number of air-borne fibers at certain locations. It has been determined that part of the reason for this was the switch to loosely bagged material because of supply difficulties in obtaining the usual compacted asbestos. _ Of all file recently collected samples and those obtained on this visit the only ones above the limit are those collected at the shredder location. Frankenberger 3 August 22, 1975 Job, It Is felt however that this situation could be improved so that it does not require a person to enter the shredder* Better control in the shredder room is necessary since the levels found either approach or are at the celling limit of 10 fibers per ml* Other areas In the plant were investigated as time permitted and various conditions discussed with Mr, Hine and others. Certain welding and brazing operations were observed and it was suggested that personnel type samples be obtained where cadmium and silver are major constituents. These samples may be forwarded to me so that analytical results may be obtained. Similar type samples should be obtained where lead is a major constituent so that exposure evaluation may be made.
