April 19, 1990 8 (C) ALLEGATION - LCVCM - 1989 VISTA The following summary is provided for the 8 (c) file for the alleged brain tumor problems at Vista's VCM plant in Westlake, La. R. A. Conrad, Plant Manager, drafted a letter to VCM Plant employees on September 1, 1989 in which he outlined the criteria for "company sponsored medical screening for brain tumors". (Basically any LCVCM employee who had worked in the vinyl industry for at least 10 years was "eligible".) A three month period (9/8/89-12/8/89) was identified for those who were eligible and elected to have the neurological evaluation/examination performed. A total of eleven LCVCM employees elected to have the examination with Dr. Gerald R. Litel, Neurosurgeon, Lake Charles, La, at a cost of $300.00 per individual (total cost: $3300.00). Because of medical history data presented to Dr. Litel, three employees underwent additional tests, e.g. Cat Scan, MRI studies. Costs connected with these additional procedures were handled by the individual's group health insurance plan. Conclusion: No evidence of any active intercranial injury or disease process was detected for any of the eleven employees who elected to have the additional medical/neurosurgical evaluation.
