Box 1446 Louisville 1, Kentucky Dear Mr. Brown: The enclosed report will, I believe, be self-explanatory. Insofar as the sample of water supplied to us is representative of the indicated source, there is no reason to suspect that either lead or gasoline played any part in the illness of persons who drank this water or used it for other purposes. I should like to remind you of an additional point to which I have called attention previously. It is not possible to ingest enough lead from water contaminated with leaded gasoline to cause lead poisoning, if the gasoline is the only source of the lead. The reason for this is that the concentration of lead in the gasoline is low, and that a quantity of leaded gasoline in water sufficient to yield a toxic quantity of lead, would, of itself, (that is the gasoline alone) induce an acute form of intestinal irritation that would prevent the further use of the gasoline. This fact can be shown by a simple series of calculations, but it has also been demonstrated by human experience. This matter is of no apparent consequence in the present situation, but it has occurred to me to be worthy of mention in view of the opinion requested at the bottom of the first page of your letter.
