The Uharco board operation or Bloomington plant enuees industrial hygiene problems dae to tha escape of oaboatod fibers into the building eircirennent. The principal problcrs3 are in the mising and edge trim areas. In the mixing area, tho raw as bestos fibers are aaz.uaj.ly dumped froa a bag onto a transfer conveyor. This dumping allows asbestos fibers to escape into the baildirg. A second serious problem in the mixing ere a involves 'he dust emanation from the miners during preparation of a batch cf slurry, las edge trim cj'/s now in use present another serious problem due to the use of an inefficient exhaust system which allows a considerable amount of csbaotos fibers to escape from the saws into the room.
It is proposed to design efficient collection hoods for the areas involved and transport the collected floors to a fabric dust collector located cn the south side of the building adjacent to an area now used for salvaged equipment stoi'age. The installation of hoods in the mixing area will require a shutdown of thio equipment. The new hoods at the two ?dga trim saws may be installed while ono saw is kept in operation. The collector cow located in the mixing area will be eliminated duo to insufficient capacity.
The installation of tho proposed system is expcccod to produce an environment
in tho mixing area that will eon'a-nn no more than 5 fibers/rl asbastos concen
tration. Due to the traversing opsravloa of the edge trim saws, it is expected
that tha 5 fibsr/sl
concentration will not be achieved in the immediate
vicinity of the edge trim saws.
