ABERDEEN, Mias. (August Qo^ 1994) -- Vista Chemical Company's
Aberdeen operations' emissions reported under the Superfund Amendments and Reaubhorization Act of 1966 (SARA) decreased 72 percent from 1987 until 1993.
Under SARA, chemical companies tell federal and local governments about any of a list of 300 chemicals they emit to the air, land or water. Vista's Aberdeen plant uses eight of the listed chemicals. Emissions of five of the eight chemicals increased during 1993.
"The increases of these five chemicals are not significant, with the exception of vinyl chloride monomer (VCM),* noted Turner, plant manager. "The 41 percent increase of VCM emissi can be attributed to a three percent increase in production ^nd
strip testing we did during the year.* To manage its VCM emissions, the plant uses a
recovers or `strips' unused VCM from the polyviny

It takes months to calculate the numbers that must be reported under SARA. Results for a given calendar year are not reported to the Environmental Protection Agency until July of the following year, so 1993 numbers are the most current.
'"We'll continue to work to reduce the impact we have on the environment," Turner said. "Taking care of the environment is one of our top priorities."
Vista's Aberdeen plant began operation in 1963. Its main products, recyclable polyvinyl chloride resins and flexible compounds are used to make a wide variety of consumer and industrial products including wire and cable coatings, vinyl house siding, pipe and pipe fittings and window and door frames.
