INTER-COMPANY AND INTER-DEPARTMENTAL CORRESPONDENCE to: See Distribution v *\ C. H. FitzGerald * from: Quality Control - SMPD dat*; August 13, 1973 i subject: Non-Asbestos Test 8/8 - 8/10/73 Activity: Corrugated "B" Machine, modified EP5273, #665E 1. Ran for 3 consecutive shifts of production before forming difficulties began to produce an unacceptable product. Admittedly there were some machine problems aggravating the situation; however, by Friday morning the blow tank was plugged with slurry solids and proper forming was inpossible. 2. Manufacturing is dissatisfied with this recipe for the following, reasons: 1. Solids content too high, too difficult to pulp. 2/ Solids settling out not only in corrugated blow tank but also in Mark III slurry lines. 3. Excessive foaming. 3. Production for the 6 shifts showed very little green scrap until late Thursday night. The following dry scrap percentage was recorded: 2,640 pcs. produced 311 pcs. scrap 11.71 4. D. Butler feels that agitation of the slurry in blow tank may be necessary for an asbestos free recipe to work. These studies indicate that severe or extended agitation of this recipe tends to ball the fiberglass, consequently the fiberglass settles out rapidly and the suspension system is no longer stable. Conclusions: 1. -.The recipe-is unacceptable for production use in its present fora and utilizing our existing equipment. 2. Perhaps modifications of slurry delivery system would permit the use of this recipe. GHF:mlr: 193 Distribution: P. A. Partington; E. Auzenbergs/J. C. Mohr, G. Fenton, H. D. Shephard/A. Santighian, V.
