Asbestos can not be eliminated from use on steam generator and pressurizer contracts because it is an inherent part of the gaskets qualified for use and required by contract to be used. Here is the further information you needed: . 1. Spiral wound Flexitallic gaskets are used for hydrotest,, and new ones are installed for shipment for all hand holes and manways on pressurizer and steam generators. 2. The asbestos is compressed between the Inconel spirals of the gaskets. 3. A total of four to six Flexitallic gaskets, on the average, are used on each pressurizer and steam generator. 4. No work is done on the material at B&W except for the required handling. No new applications requiring asbestos use has occurred on these components within the past 20 years, to my knowledge. However, Mr. Dingman will alert his Materials Engineers to apprise us if any new applications are proposed. I do not believe there is any need for further controls. /hs cc: A. T. DespresB, M. Despres dated l/l8/79> same subject You advised in January 1979 the only asbestos materials used for Commercial Nuclear application was in flexatallic gaskets; and. Navy Nuclear application was limited to flexatallic and cranite gaskets. The serious problems that are associated with the use, storage and handling of asbestos bearing materials makes it imperative that every effort be made to eliminate these materials, wherever possible, from B&W works. Therefore, we ask if all asbestos bearing material can be eliminated from all Nuclear contracts; if not, we will need the following information: 1. The specific application and/or use of the material in the different types of contracts. 2. A complete description of the materials and whether the asbestos contained is woven or compressed. 3. The normal quantities used per unit. 4. Any work done to or with the material at B&W; i.e., cutting, trimming, packing, etc. (this is very important). Effective immediately. Engineering is requested to setup controls to assure that any new materials containing asbestos are not introduced into the Navy and Commercial Nuclear systems without prior approval of NED M&IC and the Barberton Safety Office. Date JANUARY 2b, 1979 The NED Materials Lab uses Ascarite, which is caustic impregnated asbestos fiber for gravimetric carbon analysis and moisture traps at this time. Long fiber asbestos is occasionally used for Gooch filtering. Asbestos cloth is used for simmering and slow sample dissolution. If you should need any other information, please let me know.
