ABEX CORPORATION AHERICAN BRAKEBLOK DIVISlm; ~/INCH:ES'l'ER, VIRGnUA Hygiene SUrvey for Lead and Asbestos On January 23 and 24, 1968, samples for airborne lead and asbestos dust vere collected iD the vet and dry compounding areas, in the book and the block press preforming areas and in the block and the strip finishing areas. The lead samples vere analyzed ,by our Hopkinton Laboratory and compared to a Threshold Limit Value of 0.2 Mg Pb/c.m. of air. The dust samples vere cOunted microscopically at 300X and compared to a Threshold Limit Value of 5 mppcf. CONCtuSlffilS: 1. Asbestos in Air: ifuile some of the dust counts are above the recommended level of 5 tnppcf for asbestos containing dust, examination of the samples under the microscope indicate' that only a fey of the particles counted are actually rihers and the other appears to be dust other than asbestos. Based on these observations I am not inclined to consider these leveia as hazardous aa suggested by the total count, but to tamper this judgment in viev of the fact that something 1esB than 10'; of the particles counted vere actually floors, Reference to the data sheet -.rill shov that the grinding operat~on8 appear to be ve11 controlled and the operations vbleh resulted in the higher dust count vere those which a large volume of air was displaced such as in the dumping operation, and in tbe strip preform area. - - - - - - - - - - LIBERTY MUTUAL INSURANCE COMPAl'iY- KHALL02919 , KAZ 002919 2. Lead Concentrations in Air: Reference to the data sheet vill shOll only tllO lIere above the recommended Threshold Limit Value . of 0.2 Hg/c.m. of ~ir . One of these \18.9 general room air collected near press #8 in the strip preform areaf in vie... of the other levels in this area and our observations, this is probably due to contamination of the filter paper aomevhere in the sampling and/or packaging technique. All other samples collected in this area vera ...ell belov this level and those 'collected in the breathing zone of the operator vere vell vithin the suggested Threehold Limit Value. The other high concentration of the airborne lead vas collected in the breat.h1ng zone of the operatOr dumping the scale hopper on the vet compound line. Our observation at the the time vas that a small plume of dust is released into this atmosphere vhen operation is conducted. Even considering tbe fact that this operation takes only ~ fe... miDutes about 10-15 times per shift. this Is still high enough to constitute a. significant'exposure and additional controls are varranted. . J. Exhaust Ventilation: With the exception of the strip pra- fonriing and the dumping .from the upper level to the lover level, the exhaust ventilation equipment appears to be providing adequate controls~ These tvo exceptions are probably due to the operation itself creating turbulent velocities in excess of the control velocities designed for these installations, and as a result dust is blolm out of the influence of the exhaUsted-environment. Even though the dust concentrations in these areas are not considered severely hazardous 1 they are higb enough to wrrant investigation into the feasibilityof either providing better enclosures and/or increased velocities for these operations. Wet Compound Line - Hixer Exhaust: It is recomended that all. the mixers on the wet compound line be provided with an lnvard draft sufficient to control the puffs of dust vbich are released vhen dumping the veigbing hoppGr. 2. Strip Press Preforming and Dumping Locations on First Floor: It is recommended that the exhaust ventilation on these locations be improved eitber by increased velocity or improved enclosure to B, degree sufficient to control the puffs 'of dust emitted vhen operating the presses and dumping the material from the upper level to the ,lover level. KAZ KHALL02921 002921 DISCUSSION: On the days of. the Survey all operationsappear to be operating normally and for the mostpart the exhaust ventilating equipmemt appeared 'to be doing the job for vhich it vas intended. . As vas mentioned earlier 60me of the dust ooncentrations are a~ve the Threshold Limit'Value of 5 mppcf suggested for dust containing asbestos. Hovever, since som~thing les8 than l~ of the particles counted vera fibers, it is felt that the severity of the situation is not quite as serious as would be the case if all the particles vera fibers. . HA1JAGEMENT INTEREST: The interest of management and supervision in providing a healthful environment seems to be carrying over veIl to the individual employees. During our survey ve noted no evidence of ventilation equipment abuse or lack of respect on the part of the individual employees. Since the exhausting of air eontalnillants for this plant is such an important part of the operation, it is urged that continued emphasla be placed on quality maintenance and proper utilization of equipment provid, ed.
