PLAINTIFF'S EXHIBIT Fwbnmry 20, 1945 Dr* G. J. Wherrett Executive Secretary Canadian Tube culosis Association Plaza Building Ottawa, Out., Canada Dear Dr. Wherratti Thank you very .-such for yojr cos*unication of February 13th relative to to the study which was aada of the tuberculosis mortality of Tbetford Vines and some other eoamunitiea is the Province. I aa glad that you raised the question about the possibility of a coaaunlty survey in Thetford Hines* 1 think the tine Is ripe for such an undertaking. It will depend, however, on someone*s taking the ini- tlatlve to carry it through* As you may know. Dr* Jacques Cartier has bssn appointed Medical Director of ths Industrial Health Clinic for the asbestos operators in Thstford Hinas* Dr* Cartier has had experience in tuberculosis surveys through his connection with the Sontrenl intituberculosis League* I think he would be Interested !n doing such a *udy if he were approached* I think you would know better then Z whether a public or private agency Should sponsor such a study. I think unquestionably the wine operators would he more receptive to such a study than at any tlae in tha past. I sent a copy of tha report to Dr. Tourangeau, Director of Industrial Hyv;iena of the Provincial Health peportsent. He shoved it to Dr. Parrot, the Provincial Demographer, but I do not know afoether ha showed it to Dr. Poley* I wet Hr* Foley when I was in Quebec* Z shall write to Dr. Tourangeau end suggest that ha show tha report to Dr* Fkley. This ' ay help pave the way for a proposal that tha Provincial Health Department undertake a coaaunity survey, if this seen* the test method of haring tha survey dona. I hope it will he possible for you to folios up the situation* Dr* Burnette will, I know, he Just as interested as we in the outcoae.end will want to cooperate in any eay that is possible* With kindest regards. February 13, 1945. Dr. George M. Wheatly, Assistant Medical Director, Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, New York City, U.S.A. x\\ v' Dear Dr. Wheatly:- Dr. Burnette has passed along to me a copy of the very in teresting study cf tuberculosis mortality in Thetford Mines, P.Q,., which you have recently made. I think this is a very excellent report. This should tend to clear up any tendency to blame the high death rate for tuberculosis in this area on the asbestos industry. The report will also be helpfhl in focussing attention on that locality and I am wondering if it would be possible to interest the provincial group to undertake a community survey there. ~ With kind regards. Bincerely, GJW/S ' wherrett, M.D., Sxdcutive Secretary. 0743
