Dear Doctor Kehoes '< A case has come up in our County in which a man whose job exposed him to the fumes of varnish, which the man stated contained 0.32% lead, died and the attending physician diagnosed his last illness as lead poisoning. The clinical findings were a wrist drop, swollen blue gums, and blue nail beds. There was no laboratory work done on this patient so that we have no information as to the blood picture or urine analysis. Would the exposure to this amount of lead in a small drying room with poor ventilation be sufficient to produce lead poisoning? Also, is there a demonstrable variation in the amount of lead intake in different people that will produce serious lead poisoning? .
