Dorsey Division Headquarters October 8, 1971 Fesco Particulate You advised me the other day that the rumored litigation by workmen against Johns-Manville on account of Perlite dust was a false start. As I advised you the other day, the Center for Political Research has indicated that Dr. Selikoff is now in early exploratory tests on fiber glass products. If we apply sequential logic. Dr. Selikoff's next move will be the third product that we extract. I now have Cliff Sheckler's letter to the Rockdale Plant Manager regarding a recent visit by a State of Illinois Department of Labor inspector. A copy of the report has not been made available but Cliff Sheckler has asked for additional information to determine if there was any in terest or opinion expressed on the toxicity of Perlite dust In the past two months there have been numerous comments . jabout Fesco dust, and I think the time has arrived when we "should initiate a formal program. If you will recall, the' "roofing"consultant Ed Schreiber"took specific exception to the quality of Fesco and used dust as a prime or major deterrent in the assembly of good built-up roofing systems. Of course, we now know that Schreiber was retained as a consultant by Jones and Laughlin on the Hennepin, Indiana, job, and while they have not given us a copy of his find ings, it is quite clear that he identified Fesco as the major problem and recommended litigation against J-M. (Incidentally, as we conclude the J & L settlement ask Jack Robinson if he could persuade Joe Maruszewski to make Schreiber's recommendation available for reading purposes). At this point there is no necessity to be defensive, but we certainly have enough experience to realize that "dust" of any kind makes environmental control news, and I think we better get our program underway as soon as possible. s RHC:cs cc: F.
