Greg Denton date: December 8, 1986 Asbestos Regulations COMES TO: REFERENCE: Per OSHA Safety and Health Standards 29 CFR 1926.58, Asbestos, employers are required to designate a competent person to perform and supervise the following duties. 1. Set up negative pressure enclosures. 2. Ensure the integrity of the enclosure. 3. Control entry and exit from the enclosure. 4. Supervise exposure monitoring of asbestos. 5. Establish personal protective equipment requirements, including clothing and respirators. 6. Ensure the training of asbestos workers. 7. Ensure personal hygiene and decontamination procedures are established and followed. In addition to the above qualifications, the competent person must be trained in all aspects of asbestos abatement, the contents of 29 CFR 1926.58 asbestos standard, the identification of asbestos, the removal procedures and any other practices for reducing the hazard. The OSHA standard states that training of a competent person must be accomplished by attending a comprehensive course, such as a course conducted by an EPA asbestos training center or an equivalent course. The training of the competent person must be complete by mid-January, 1987. These training courses are offered by various institutions throughout the country.
