August 14 1924. Following is a brief summary of the experimental work on rabbits at Bayway Refinery since the last report dated July 1, 1924: Of the first batch rabbits started May 26 1924t known as BuPonts 1* 4 and 6 and S.O. 2 S and 5 there is living now only DuPont No. 4 which is the mother of five healthy rabbits. Treatments are discontinued from date of birth of litter of five on July 5. 1924. Total Pb. applied 7.222 gm. Apparently the baby rabbits and mother are thriving. This rabbit is in Pen Bo. 2. Second Batch (Mixed and fthita Babbits) Started June 4, 1924. Plan: To apply to rabbits Daily as in coaRsegrcial use. ( 1* Control - straight gas ) 2. DuPont ( 3. DuPont ) ( 4. S.O. ) 5. S.O. ( 6. S.O. (Wild) ) ) ( White Rabbits ) ) ( Colored rabbits ) Of this batch all dies (per previous report) except Ho* 2 (DuPont v/hite) and Ho. 6 (wild). These were showing signs of such extreme emaciation that treatments were discontinued on July 17th with the idea of ascertaining if they had recuperative powers. Both theee rabbits have regained their coats of hair (which previously had all but disappeared) and appear well and healthy. No treatment since July 17. These rabbits are in Pen 1. Third Batch Rabbits "Mixed Pen" Started June 5 1924. Pen No. 3. Originally consisted of A * Black S.O. 3 - arrived in poor condition and died 5/28 C - Large Gray DuP D - Escaped abouth 4th Day 7 - Towsey 4 - DuPont (Patch light brown) later preg. 5 - Patch Gray S.O. (Milled 6/25) -2- A - Black 3.0. received 1 brushful (about 0.278 gm Pb) as pure compound, daily to ears from June 5* Stopped on August 9, as this rabbit had a litter. Humber not known. She had burrowed a considerable distance under ground. One was found above, it had crawled thru the wire into an adjoining pen. She mother waa separated from the buck and we are attempting to raise this rabbit. It appBrs to be about 10 days old, (this date 8-13). During the course of treatment this rabbit offered very little resistance - appeared to be somewhat lethargic. liow that treat ments hare stopped and she has the little one, she appears to be Mpi eking up,f. At present in Pen 5. Amount of rb applied approximately 48 doses x .278 mga. - 13.334 gras. Pb* C - large Gray BuP received same treatment as above. Sara became so encrusted it was necessary to clip the hair from the trunk for treatments. After a few applications the skin becomes lard, shriveled and leathery, so that spots suitable for absorption seem difficult to obtain. Shis rabbit has been under treatment continuously since June 5, apparently showing no ill effects, but may be storing considerable Pb. internally. Amt. of Pb. approximately 15.012 gms* In Pen ho. 3. 7 -TOWSEY This rabbit placed (later on 7/5/24} with Fourth Batch (White Babbits) to replace Ho. 7 - Control, killed accidently in a storm. Is diseased. Has a tumor at lowar dorsal and Sacral region; is receiving daily since 7/5/24, 5 c.c. of straight gas applied to back and trunk. Doss not manifest any systemic disturbance. In Pen Ho* 41* Ho. 4 - DuPont (Patch li^it brown - later preg.) This is the only one living of the First Batch. Received 0.278 gm. daily applied to ears fwom d/5/24 to 7/5/24. Surmised pregnancy about o/ll. Had a littler of five on 55/5. Mother and baby rabbits appear noxmal in every way. Total Pb* including previous dosage about 14.178 gm* Ho treatments since 7/5/24. In Pen Ho. 2. FOURTH BATCH Started 6/19/24. Plan: See previous report. Batch consisted of Bos. 7, 8, 9, 10. Of these Q and 10 only are living. 7 - killed in storm (control) Replaced by #7 -Towsey 8 - Living S.O. 9 - Died 7/tt9 DuPont 10 - Living - control - straight gas. Kr 0017691 3* So. 8 has bean receiving 5 o.e. of S.O. gas mixture (containing about .004 gm. ft).} from 6/19/24 to date (8/14/2S) in all approximately .180 gm. Shis rabbit shows beginning emaciation* loss of hair# toughened skin and lassitude. The preparation is poured from a graduate to the back of the animal. Ho. 9 was receiving the same treatment except with a DuPont mixture. Survived until 7/18. Pound dead A.M. 7/19. Ruptured abdominal abscess - large number of maggots showed rapid decomposition. This rabbit probably had a fulmin ating fatal peritonitis. &mt* of Fb. 0.100 gm Ho P made for Pb. Ho. 10 Control living. Receiving daily 5 c.c* of straight gas. Skin hard and crusty - losing hair and appears livelier than Ho. 8. Ho. 7 Replaced by Towsey - diseased (Tumors) same treatment, control - living. 0017892 PIGS 1 - S.O. 2 - S. 0. 3 - S.O. 4 - DuPont 5 - DuPont 6 - DuPont See Previous reports. On July 1 Pigs 4 end d only were living, treatments had stopped fro 6/2 to 6/18. On 6/19 these pigs (4 and 6 BuPonts) apparently hairing recovered were placed on a treatment of 3 e.c. etrsightgas poured on back. Pig Ho. 6 lasted until 7/l8. Pig Ho. 4 still receiving 3 c.c. straight gas. Loses considerable hair* becomes vary restless for about 8 or 10 hours. O.K* next A.M. out gradually failing in strength. Dying on 8/14/24 4 p.m. the only treatments at present being given are as follows: DuPont Habbit C (lagre gray) - 1 bruehful daily {0.273 gau PB) S.O.Babbit Ho. 8-5 c.c. of S.O.Gas Mixture (.004 Pb) Ho. 7 towsey ) Ho 10 White } Straight gas 5 c.o.
