Bredlow e/0 Standard Oil of Indiana Detroit, Michigan Dear Mr. Bredlow: Allow me to thank you somewhat tardily for your attention to the collection and sending of the samples from the five men who became ill as a result of cleaning out one of your tanks. The examination of the samples has established the fact that the lead excretion of these men is uniformly higher than that of normal persons, especially in the urine. Thus, my suspicion that the Illness resulted from the absorption of tri-ethyl lead compounds is justified by these findings. We have no doubt that the high lead findings were of short duration and that the men will not suffer any delayed effect from their experience. Nevertheless, there is every reason to believe that their condition resulted from the absorption of lead, and that certain precautions are necessary in carrying out work of this type. I am sending a copy of our findings to the Medical Department of the Standard Oil Company. I understand that precautions have already been sug gested which will obviate the likelihood of a recurrence of this trouble.
