This is not a requirement. Our chemical goggles meet the ANSI Z87.1 specification, which includes both splash and impact protection. Spectacle type glasses are required under face shields, welding hoods and cutting goggles (Safety Manual Page 46, Item 3) . While on this subject, let me point out that eye protection is a subject that needs more attention. During the last half of 1979, we had 84 injuries involving foreign bodies in the eye; and twelve of these were recordable. Investigation of these injuries revealed the following causes as the most prevalent: 1. Failure to wear goggles--depending on safety glasses only. 2. Removing goggles laden with dust or contaminated with liquid, and dropping some of the material into the eye(s) . 3. People standing near operations requiring goggles or face shields, but bystanders were not equally protected. 4. Failure to wear goggles when operating air powered tools in dusty areas. 5. Wiping the eye or face with hands or gloves contaminated with chemicals. Key Eye Protection Pointers to Remember A. Goggles must fit well to be effective. Visor Gogs do not offer the best protection against dust or liquid splash, since they do not provide a close fit. B. Face shields offer face protection. Eye protection should be worn beneath if there is an eye hazard. In an accident, the face shield wearer's head is almost always turned to one side, as he tries to escape. This allows material to enter behind the shield and into the eyes. C. Safety glasses must be worn under welding hoods and cutting goggles.
