Yalcinkaya - 515 (B-l) Date: April 15, 1981 Subject: Memo Re Dr. Leffingwell's Phone Conversation I called Leffingwell 4/10/81 to explain the inclusion of Trlchloroethane in the Chemical List for Energy Systems Department Group DG006. I pointed out that the use of Trlchloroethane was confined largely to the degreasing of equipment used in oxygen service. Since the Air Separation Unit (also known as B-Gas or Oxygen Plant) which uses Trlchloroethane as a cleaning agent is presently part of the Energy Systems Department, this chemical was shown in DG006. Most of the Energy Systems facilities do not use Trlchloroethane. Leffingwell understood what I was saying and then asked which department codes referred to the Air Separation Unit. After checking, I called him back and gave him the following codes 13100 13110 13140 00800 00106 HX000 pointing out that HX000 could also refer to "Work For Other Units In Carbide". He then asked about code 88500, which has two possible translations -- "Work For Other Units in Corp" or "Linde Dlv @ 515". Specifically, there were several controls with this department code in their work history which Leffingwell did not know which translation to use. He gave me the names: 0. M. Rector, Jr., Walter C. Trimble and J. R. Rex. From Dorothy Heyen's files, I ascertained that the 88500 codes in these records referred to work outside of Texas City (specifically Brownsville, Belgium, Ponce and Brazil). I later called Leffingwell to report this to him. Also, he had asked about code 49200 for a Mr. Stalcup (another control). From Dorothy's records, I concluded that the dictionary translation "Linde Div" was probably correct and that he had worked either at Air Separation or Linde bottling plant In which case he could have been exposed to Trlchloroethane. I passed this on to Leffingwell* Leffingwell seemed satisfied with the info X supplied him. He did not indicate whether he still considered Trlchloroethane a possible problem.
