The diffraction pattern la of fair quality but somewhat faint, indicat lug "tie sample to contain an appreciable non-cry stallina fraction. The major costal line component la p-CaO *S10a and there is a minor amount of CaCOa. Quartz is not detected and, if present, oust not constitute sore than about 2$ of the sample. A number of lines remain unexplained, two of considerable strength. They are not due to cbrysotile asbestos nor to other varieties of asbestos for which data are immediately available. However, the diffraction data on asbestos are not highly reliable or complete. Furthermore, the asbestos minerals give poor quality powiar diffraction patterns and are not readily identifiable by x-ray diffraction moans alone. Sample Ho. 3T3 > 5 ^(Film P997). The pattern is the same as the above except that the lines of quarts appear. Spectrometer analysis shows the quartz content to be l6. The spottiness of the quartz lines shows that a considerable fraction of it is rather coarse, mean particulate dimension perhaps 5C-1GC microns. As in the < 3 M fraction, the major constituent is 0-CaC-SiO^ and a minor amount of C3C03 is present. Patterns of Raw Materials: r Asbestos (Film P98I) -- The pattern observed is due almost entirely to quartz, which constitutes about 10-153 of the material. Only three Hues of appreciable strength remain, and they do not check the available asbestos data. Kenite (Film P9&2} -- The material Is largely amorphous. It gives a faint clay-like pattern which is too diffuse in nature to be observed & a mixture with tbs patterns of other materials, as in Sample 373 0 l( \A Clay (Film P98J) -- The material is predominancy kaolin!te end gives a good diffraction pattern. It should ^s possible to detect ii ; concentrations down to about 1C3, but it was sot observed in Sample 873. Leroy 2. Alexander: ale T3 <C m. T.^v-50 . ^SSSKR FELLOW
